Kickstarter bans GMOs

Last Wednesday, the famous crowdfunding site Kickstarter made changes to the rules of its work. Among the banned projects on the site are added projects with GMOs (genetically modified organisms). This happened just a couple of weeks after the Glowing Plants company raised $ 484 thousand to develop luminous plants.

Geneticists from Glowing Plants position luminous plants as “the first step in creating natural lighting,” that is, in a way, as a replacement for light bulbs.

Having invested only $ 40, each investor will receive a bag of seeds of luminous plants for growing at home.

For 10 thousand, you can even embed an arbitrary text, up to 30 characters, into the DNA of the plant.

It would seem that it is bad in such projects, why should they be prohibited? Kickstarter representatives were unable to provide a clear explanation: “We want to be as open as possible, while safeguarding the welfare and creative spirit of Kickstarter in the long run,” they said.

Apparently, the ban is associated with the widespread belief that genetically modified organisms are supposedly harmful to human health, although there is not a single reliable scientific study that would confirm this hypothesis.

In order not to provoke disputes and not attract the attention of negatively minded “fanatics”, it was decided to ban such products for financing. It is unfortunate that because of this, many interesting and promising projects will not receive material support. all the more sad that Kickstarter has banned the financing of not only GMO food, but generally any development in this area.
