Caution: Attackers

Recently, users have been complaining to us about ads in which they allegedly offer money as a gift on behalf of Yandex. In this case, the person is asked to enter the mobile number, and then the activation code from the received SMS message. If the user does so, then, without knowing it, he connects a paid SMS subscription. They begin to send him SMS, for example, with a weather forecast, and every day they write off money for it from his mobile account.

    Caution: Attackers

We are not related to such ads, even if they appear on the background of Yandex. And, for our part, we are trying to protect you from the actions of intruders. Yandex is now actively identifying pages created to trick out a phone number. A warning that it’s better not to go to these pages appears in the search results, in Yandex.Browser and other software.

In addition, we identify sites that have code installed that trigger the display of ad cybercriminals. The presence of such code reduces the quality of sites, so in the search results they will be shown lower than better resources.

Fraudsters intentionally fake web pages under well-known sites that people trust. They use the name of not only Yandex, but also other popular services - for example, VKontakte or Odnoklassniki. In addition to promises, threats and warnings are used - for example, “Your account has been hacked”, “Anti-virus is outdated. Urgent update. "

Be careful not to fall for the tricks of intruders and help your less technically advanced friends and relatives. We even prepared a ready-made list that can be shared with technically less advanced people who have fallen for such fraud.

If someone is already caught, here's what you can do:

    1. First of all, turn off SMS subscription. You can find out how to do this from your mobile operator - on the website or by calling its support service. You can also inform the operator about the fact of fraud and ask for a refund for the service that was imposed on you by fraud. Below you will find links to the relevant sections of the sites of the largest operators.

    2. Check your computer with antivirus. You can use, for example, the free Yandex version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus or the anti-virus programs from the list on this page (point 2). After that, just in case, you can see if the virus has replaced the DNS address on the computer or the entries in the hosts file (in the case of a substitution, the browser may not open the site that you need). If you don’t understand this, ask someone you know.

    Network Safety

Fraudulent ads are shown not only on web pages that are faked under Yandex or popular services. A message like “Your account has been hacked” can appear on any site that has a code that starts displaying such ads. By clicking on them, users go to the page created by the attackers. In addition, the cause of messages may be a virus that has settled on your computer. Here are some simple tips on how not to fall for the tricks of scammers:

    1. Try to be critical of the alluring or intimidating ads you see online. Do not buy “We give you 500 rubles” or “Your browser is outdated and will be disabled”, “Your account on VKontakte has been hacked”. It is unlikely that someone will just throw money down the drain, and browsers never warn of their disconnection. Think about whether there is a connection between the site you are on and the message that appears. For example, can an abstract bank know that your page at Odnoklassniki has been hacked. If you want to make sure that everything is in order with your account, go to the social network in the usual way - without clicking on a dubious message.

    2. If you are asked for a phone number or other personal information, find out exactly who is asking. Look at the address of the web page: if it has errors or other oddities, the page is most likely unsafe. For example, the Yandex address is yandex.ru, and the address yandex.ru.546827.84756.ru is no longer Yandex.

    3. Use software that reduces the chance of being hooked. We recommend that you install, for example, Yandex.Browser or our Firefox assembly. They warn about pages that are better not to open. If you’re used to another browser, you can add Elements to it. This is an extension that also warns of untrusted pages. To protect your computer, install an antivirus program.

    4. Tell us about a new way to lure money to your loved ones, especially children and older people who are poorly oriented on the Internet. The more people who are in the know, the less money will go to scammers.
