IPTV over Wi-Fi - a problem? Absolutely no problem!

I think many have encountered such a problem. The provider provides an IPTV service, not WebTV over HTTP, but classic IPTV over UDP multicast. There is a TV with an Ethernet port or a media player that supports this service. On the router, enable the Multicast Stream function (or IPTV multicast). We connect our TV or media player to it with a twisted pair, upload the playlist file in M3U or XML format and enjoy watching TV programs in HD quality.

But I, as apparently many readers, had the desire to get rid of unnecessary wires. Moreover, there are many smartphones, tablets and other gadgets that do not have the physical ability to connect wires. And simply, Wi-Fi is more convenient, as they say "further, more, better."

I decided to use the following scheme:

... and I saw this “HDTV” ...

Malevich’s squares, but still it’s not possible to watch, but, according to a large number of descriptions from different forums, some only have the same Malevich ...

He began to study the issue. It turned out that IPTV multicast, far from all Wi-Fi access points are able to correctly transmit. And this, to a large extent, is not a bug of firmware of routers and access points, but features of the protocol and its implementation in radio chips.
So what to do? The desire to lie on the couch and watch IPTV on the tablet did not lessen.
A fairly simple solution was found - the UDP-to-HTTP service. A pretty simple program that converts UDP multicast packets to HTTP unicast on the fly. And this same HTTP unicast is superbly transmitted over Wi-Fi.
And here I was once again convinced that it was not in vain that I spent “hard earned” money on the D-Link DNS-325 network drive . He has the ability to install additional software, the so-called Add-Ons. At the same time, installing Add-Ons absolutely does not interfere with the work of the basic functionality. That is, after installing Add-Ons, services such as Samba, FTP, NFS, DLNA, etc. continue to work on it, without compromising functionality and performance.
And so what we do. From the site http: // dlink / dns we take the Add-On "UDP-to-HTTP".

Install Add-On on DNS-325 through the section "Management / Application Management / Add-Ons".

Messages “This add-on was not created by D-Link Corporation” are not afraid, click “Yes”.

Launch Add-On with the Start button and go to the Applications section.

image

Click on the "UDP-to-HTTP" icon. We see instructions for converting the URL of UDP multicast channels to HTTP unicast. According to it, we edit our M3U or XML playlist.

For example, if the IP address of DNS-325 is 172.17.17.11: We upload the

changed playlist to TV, a media player, IPTV viewer on a tablet or smartphone and enjoy watching HD programs (well, of course, if your Wi-Fi bandwidth allows).

The working scheme is as follows:

Summary: IPTV without "squares", via Wi-Fi, can be watched on any TV or gadget using any router with built-in Wi-Fi. The main thing is to choose the right device and the right software.
In the near future I’ll try to write small articles on other, equally interesting Add-Ons, in my opinion, a very successful device called D-Link DNS-325 .
