The place where the Russian Internet started

Recently, the company RUVDS offers its customers virtual servers (VPS / VDS), located in a data center based on one of the largest communication centers - MMTS-9. We have entered into an agreement for hosting server and telecommunications equipment at the MMTS-9 (M9) site of Rostelecom - a good reason to tell you a little about this legendary site, whose history is inextricably linked with the history of the Russian Internet. Currently, about 200 VPS are already based on it, deployed by RUVDS clients to solve various tasks.

Today, MMTS-9 - MSK-IX (M9-IX, Moscow Internet Exchange) is the largest Internet traffic exchange point (IX) in Russia, located in Moscow. By the way, this is the sixth largest IX in the world. At the site there are all significant telecom operators and traffic exchange nodes. Network connectivity is provided at a very high level.
RUVDS company RUCLOUD data center is connected to the backbone communications hub in the M9 data center by a direct channel with a capacity of 10 Gb / s. This allows customers to guarantee a high rate of traffic exchange between virtual servers.located in different data centers. They are also provided with 24/7 round-the-clock support, virtual servers are hosted on enterprise-class equipment with an 99.98% uptime performance. Plus, the included Windows license and AIG insurance .

RUCLOUD (Moscow 01) - RUVDS’s own data center in an air-raid shelter in Moscow. It is designed in accordance with the TIER III reliability category in accordance with the TIA-942 standard (N + 1 redundancy with a fault tolerance level of 99.98%), certified in accordance with the requirements of the FSTEC of Russia, and has a unique system of protection against flooding. Moscow 02 - rented racks in the M9. The distributed data center system also includes two foreign sites.
What is the data center M9?
From the history of "nine"
The history of MMTS-9, the largest technological platform in Moscow for interaction between Russian and international telecom operators, has more than two decades. Back in 1995, the main Moscow providers created on the basis of the Moscow Intercity Telephone Station No. 9, the main shareholder of which a year earlier was Rostelecom, a point of mutual exchange of IP traffic. The equipment of the main Internet providers was placed there, there were international and long-distance communication channels.
The providers wanted to exchange their traffic with each other directly, optimizing routes for its passage, which significantly reduced data transfer times and the loading of expensive international communication channels. Coordination of MSK-IX was entrusted to the Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks (RosNIIROS).

Despite the solid history created on the basis of the MMTS-9 data center M9 has quite modern technical equipment, including engineering infrastructure, a structured cable system (FO / UTP5 / UTP6 interconnecting lines in the hall and MMTS-9), uninterrupted power supply systems, climate systems, gas extinguishing systems, monitoring and video surveillance.
In 2002, the “telecommunication” modernization of the MSK-IX was carried out. The site became distributed by combining 10 points connected by a fiber-optic cable (Gigabit Ethernet). In 2013, the technological areas of MMTS-9 were updated and modernized. The machine hall has become a full-fledged data center with a high level of reliability. By 2015, the data center area for 1,500 racks (up to 47U, 600x1070 mm) was 6900 sq. M. m, summed up electrical power - 6.5 MW.

The station building houses telecommunication equipment with a power consumption of 5.5-6 kW per rack, but there are also high-loaded racks with power consumption up to 24 kW. Leasing space in the data center customers are given the opportunity to create an individual tight area.

A unified control room has been created, which collects information on the operation of all data center systems for monitoring the operation of network and IT equipment, uninterrupted power supply systems, cooling, air conditioning, fire fighting, security and access control.

Today, the Moscow Internet Exchange is a reliable, distributed system that includes ten equal points, connected by a high-speed backbone. Thanks to the MSK-IX distributed structure, the connectivity of providers to the IP traffic exchange system and high-speed transit between the MSK-IX nodes is significantly expanded. Creating a data center in a place like MMTS-9 allowed us to ensure the simplicity and convenience of interaction between operators and other owners of Internet networks.
Partners and customers of M9 are the largest companies, including MTS, Vimpelcom, Megafon, TTK, Orange Business Services, and others. The site provides a platform for exchanging IP traffic between networks and a distributed network of DNS servers to support root-domain zones. Telecom operators, social networks, search engines, video portals, cloud service providers, corporate and scientific and educational networks are connected to it. Most of the telecommunication channels connecting Russia to the world go through the M9; more than 80% of the Russian Internet is connected to the site.

In order to get closer to this famous site, we conclude with a short excursion around the M9 data center.
Excursion to the data center
The building of the station M9 is equipped with all the standards of engineering infrastructure. The power supply system of the data center provides 15.3 MW of power and includes five diesel generator sets. The power supply of the data center equipment is carried out according to 1 category of reliability, which implies the use of two- and three-beam automatic transfer switches (automatic input reserve).

Almost all machine rooms are equipped with electrical installations with direct current. 48/60 V electric control units with rechargeable batteries ensure uninterrupted operation of servers in the autonomy mode for up to 1 hour. For this purpose, UPS or DC power supply units are used.
The cooling capacity of the M9 is 11.2 MW. The data center cooling system uses a ring redundancy scheme. Each machine room is equipped with a system for continuous monitoring of air temperature, as well as measuring devices for measuring temperature and humidity in the halls, in individual racks of customers.

Cooling is provided by five water cooled chillers from EVAPCO, 4 dry cooling towers, 13 central air conditioners, 100 precision air conditioners. Chillers are installed on 2 levels - in the basement and on the upper floors of the building. Thanks to N + 1 redundancy, in case of failure of any of the system components, it can be switched off without stopping the entire system.

The signals on the state of the “climate” of the engine rooms are transmitted to a single round-the-clock dispatching service, which in the event of a deviation from the norm immediately takes action.

The data center uses a gas fire extinguishing system with early detection. Used address sensors. Also installed carbon dioxide fire extinguishers.

The policy of access to a data center with a three-tier security system operates around the clock and seven days a week. To enter the data center, documents are drawn up and all visits are recorded. The territory is constantly monitored around the clock and supervised by security officers, and camera recordings are archived. Selection and cage fencing of a section of the machine room is possible to ensure maximum security.

Currently, the M9 is one of the largest neutral sites in Moscow with equipment of a high level of complexity. The data center is constantly working on upgrading its site, which helps to improve the quality of services provided. Modern infrastructure enables M9 to provide conditions for quality work of the server equipment of the providers, which in turn allows providers to provide quality services to their customers.
