A variety of Android devices

OpenSignalMaps developers visualized download statistics for their network traffic monitoring application. For six months, it was downloaded to 681900 Android-devices from 195 countries.

The picture was beautiful: 3997 models of various Android devices were registered. The most popular is the GT-i9100 (Galaxy SII), 61389 users.

Such a great variety is partially explained by the fact that the user can change the value of android.build.MODEL when changing the firmware. It is not surprising that 1363 “models” in the OSM sample were found only once, some with beautiful names like Lemon P1, Energy Tablet i724 and EBEST E68.

599 different brands are registered (again, you need to make a discount on artifacts due to flashing). The net winner here is Samsung with 270144 devices, i.e. approximately 40%.

The variety of API versions over time becomes more and more, which is quite natural - some users with older versions of the system do not upgrade.

There are also statistics on screen resolution.

    Frequency of different resolutions.

Weighted average frequency to show the most popular.

For comparison, here are all kinds of iPad and iPhone screens.

According to the developers of OpenSignalMaps, fragmentation of Android devices makes it difficult to create applications for this platform, but there is nothing to be done.
