Comparison of iOS and Android by the probability of crash reports

The statistics of crash reports from different mobile devices shows that the percentage of successful application launches for Android is significantly higher than for iOS. This is the data from aggregated statistics collected by Crittercism, which monitors the operation of mobile applications. They release the SDK and the real-time crash reporting library, which every developer can integrate into their mobile application and receive crash statistics.

PS The chart shows normalized data that eliminated the redundancy of iOS devices in the sample. Thus, the OS share in the market does not affect these statistics, and only the probability of a failure is taken into account. Disclaimer

: Crittercismis a startup for which it is important to make a name for yourself and get free advertising through media references, and their number of investors includes Google Ventures. On the other hand, the company has no reason to undermine its core software business and risk its reputation for cheap PR.

So, to the numbers. The chart above shows the normalized statistics for crash reports for two weeks from December 1 to December 15, which contains figures for 23 versions of iOS and 33 versions of Android. In total, in November-December 2011, Crittercism processed more than 214 million application launches that use their monitoring service (162 million launches on iOS and 52 million on Android). To present these statistics, data were normalized, that is, for each device, the ratio of the number of crashes to the number of successful starts was calculated, so the relative popularity of the OS does not affect the statistics on the reliability of the system.

The following is a separate picture on iOS and Android, which shows more OS versions that were hidden in the “others” tab in the previous diagram.

As you can see, the largest proportion of crashes falls on iOS 5.01 (28.64% on a normalized sample). This is understandable, because iOS 5 is a relatively new operating system. However, a lot of crash reports come from relatively old OSs.

When you install the application on various devices, it is much more likely that the failure will occur on the iPhone.

Note that losing iOS before Android in terms of stability is not some new phenomenon. On the contrary, recently iOS and Android have almost equaled in reliability, but earlier the ratio was much worse.

For example, on December 1-15, 2011, on Android devices, the application launch failed in 2.97% of cases, and for iOS this figure is 3.66%. In early November, these figures were 0.15% and 0.51%, respectively. Apparently, such a jump in unreliability is associated with the release of new versions of both OSs. This assumption is also confirmed by trends in Google search .
