Microsoft's contribution to Linux 3.0.0 kernel development

Jonathan Corbet on the LWN.net website, together with the Linux Foundation, after each release of the Linux kernel, publishes statistics on the developers of this kernel. As you know, 75% of the new Linux code is created by commercial companies , and the most active are usually Red Hat, Intel and IBM. In the statistics on the Linux 3.0.0 kernel, the main developer companies remained the same, but some new ones appeared.

Among all individual developers, the first place in the number of commits (changesets) to the kernel (343 pcs.) Was taken by KI Srinivasan, a Microsoft employee. In total, Microsoft has 361 commits - thus, it ranked fifth among all companies in terms of the number of changes to the Linux 3.0.0 kernel.

Until July 21, the release of LWN.net is available through paid access., but he is already actively commenting , so the numbers are not a secret. Leaders in the number of kernel commits remained the same: independent developers provided 1085, Red Hat - 1000, Intel - 839, followed by Novell and IBM. But Microsoft is completely unusual to see on this list.

In fact, the riddle is solved simply: in recent months, Microsoft has stepped up the development of a driver for the Hyper-V virtualization interface. It appeared two years ago in the staging area, that is, along with other code in the kernel, which so far does not adequately meet quality standards. Since then, the driver has not been finalized, Microsoft programmers have disappeared and stopped responding to letters. The main developers of the Linux kernel even began to propose removing code from the kernel, but two months ago the situation changed. The aforementioned Srinivasan has made many small changes. Statistics on the number of edits do not take into account the importance of these commits, some of which affect only a few lines of code. Therefore, Shrinivasan and Microsoft have become leaders.

The first table contains statistics for individual developers (the number of edits and lines of code).

If we analyze the commits not by the total quantity, but by the volume, then Microsoft does not even come close to the leaders, but is at the end of the list, in 15th place. According to LWN.net, Microsoft developers changed 11,564 lines of code (1.3%). Compare this with Intel's contribution: 163,232 rows (18.1%).
