School project. Linux at school number 72 - Rostov-on-Don
The computer science cabinet turned out to be small and hot (the later turned on air conditioning did little to help). We saw 10 workstations of a typical configuration (Celeron 1.2GHz, 128Mb RAM, 40Gb HDD, CD-ROM), a teacher’s computer - much more powerful (Pentium-IV, 256Mb RAM, DVD), a network. Monitors in students - obsolete electron beam, 17 inches, the teacher - a more modern LCD. SmartBoard 6xx Interactive Whiteboard, HP LaserJet 1018 Laser Printer, CanoScan LiDE 30 USB Scanner.
I had to quickly go home for drivers for an interactive whiteboard and additional memory modules for computers, as the director and computer science teacher agreed with our recommendations that RAM should be increased on all computers.
During the installation (by the second system), the amount of RAM of each computer was doubled (student - +128, teacher - + 256MB, respectively). ALT Linux 4.0 (Junior for students, Master for teachers) was installed on all computers without any difficulties by the second system. The printer was also installed easily and simply (the HP LaserJet 1018 foo2jz model), the interactive whiteboard - without any problems, as in school No. 64. In the photos you can see how we, together with the principal and computer science teacher, have fun with TuxPaint, drawing with fingers on interactive whiteboard. The scanner worked without any additional gestures (checked using the Kooka scanning program included in the KDE kit).
We set up Internet access, installed the NetPolice content filtering program, checked it on student computers - it filters it. The notorious “experimental zone” was registered on the teacher’s computer by downloading and installing the necessary packages from the site spohelp.ru.
Computer science teachers, Elena Vladimirovna, provided a set of books from ALT Linux. In an interview with the school principal, Oksana Yuryevna, they briefly talked about the advantages and prospects of using free Linux-based software. Let's hope that the teaching of computer science at this school, from September 1 of the new school year, will go on the basis of ALT Linux.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the installation.
