Windows 8: top-secret plans and slides

imageThe guys from the Italian site managed to get to the presentation covering the entire internal world of Windows 8 - everything from the target audience to the views on application development and the product life cycle. All pictures are clickable, so enjoy - under the cut a lot of words and traffic.

    Microsoft glances toward Apple

One slide in this presentation, as it were, hints to us that when developing Windows 8, the company pays a lot of attention to the products of the apple company. The slide, entitled “How Apple Does It: A Productive Cycle,” shows how Microsoft divided Apple into an Interface / Brand / Devotion model for Apple products and noted its importance. Therefore, it is obvious that Microsoft aims to give the Windows 8 credential “It just works”, which Apple products are known for:

    Windows 8 computer prototype

Speaking about Apple, one cannot help but miss the slide with the computer, which looks like a rejected prototype of the Mac’s machine (i.e., the author doesn’t really like it, at least from the angle shown on the slide). The wallpaper is an old picture from the time of beta versions of 7ki (as you can see from the Betta fish in the center of the picture, plus information about the assembly in the lower right corner of the desktop is clearly visible there). The prototype itself is shown in the title picture, and below we see its performance characteristics:

Product Life Cycle on Windows 8

The following slide is not very clear, but it helps to consider how Microsoft divides the approach to OS development into three parts:
    • Planning (from Structure to Vision) - thoughts are leaps and bounds, more so than scenarios, and a list of main features
    • Development (from Vision to Beta) - design and development of features, updating SKU and price offers, beginning of code exchange
    • Readiness (from Beta to GA + 90) - completion of the development of features and bug fixes, tracking product availability and focus on creating a Dell + Windows connection.

Windows 8: The Evolution of User Identity

From the presentation, you can see that a ton of work is being done on how the user will access Windows. Immediately, we note the prototype, according to which the user enters the system using face recognition. You just sit down in front of the computer, after which you just need to look at the webcam, after which you will be allowed into the system.

The next slide looks at other places where verification of the user's identity is necessary. Namely, an account still remains the main way to access Windows for individuals; fast user switching is one of the important points of focus; and, which is especially nice, Windows accounts will be able to synchronize with the cloud, which will allow you to create settings that can be transferred between computers and mobile devices, as well as allow PCs to go to sites on behalf of a user (I didn’t quite understand here, mb translation difficulties, approx. Per). This will all help accounts evolve from machine-centric to user-centric.

Target Audience, Business Strategy and Form Factors

Next is a whole set of slides about Buyers and business strategies that are not of particular interest to ordinary people. I think that those who are really interested can read everything in the original. The only thing worth mentioning is the new Application Store (the “Windows Store”), which they plan to do in Windows 8. The approach to it is actually already known, everything else can be seen on the original slides. On my own, I’ll just add that Microsoft really wants to bring these plans into action as quickly as possible. Now I’ll dwell a little on the separation of form factors. The main points of interest for Microsoft are Tablets (Slate), Laptops (Laptops) and Vse-V- machines. One. Also subject to change are Applications, Devices, Multimedia, Help and Support, and Theme Interface. An interesting detail here is

Energy efficiency as a line of business

When developing Windows 8, much emphasis is placed on energy efficiency. In addition to the energy consumption itself, transitions from state to state (on / off / sleep / standby), diagnostic methods and stress resistance are considered. A new shutdown approach is also introduced, which combines system logout and sleep mode (aka “hibernation”), which will allow the system to quickly boot from the shutdown state. Below are the slides that describe the quick boot process.

    Half Hard Reset Process

Microsoft plans to introduce one interesting thing that will allow you to reinstall Windows, while preserving all your personal documents, applications, settings, etc. The following is a process for similar system recovery:
    1. John noticed that his PC began to slow down for some reason. He presses the reset button and selects a full recovery.
    2. This item will allow him to save all his data.

      image
    3. Windows automatically saves personal data and migrates accounts.

    4. The system is restored to the factory image and rebooted.
    5. After the reboot, John can launch the application store to reinstall all the programs purchased there and view a list of applications installed outside the store.

Some leftovers I don’t have enough strength for

My hands didn’t get to some of the things described in the article, so I’ll briefly say about them, at the request of the users I can subsequently cover this matter in more detail:
    • The main trends in system planning
    • Target audience (division into hardcore enthusiasts and mainstream)
    • Business Planning and Developer Shares
    • Learn more about energy conservation and form factors.
    • Recycled Help and Support
    • Internet Explorer 9
    • Windows Store
    The source
I can’t call it a Translation, because it is very limited and free. Therefore, I publish as a separate topic. I fixed all the pictures. Wildly sorry. Don’t be so indignant, I didn’t expect the dropbox to set it up like that.
