New data center

The number of our users and the volume of information are growing, and last week we launched a new, seventh in a row, data center. Our new data center is located in Mytishchi, has a supplied capacity of 4MW, and it can accommodate more than 6,000 servers. It has 4 lines, each of 1 MW. Now two are ready for work, and two more are under construction.

The data center begins with the choice of a room where there is enough electricity, where you can conduct optics for communication and agree on a long-term lease of the room. After the repair of the room begins.

It can be seen that there are legs on the floor, on which the raised floor will subsequently lie. And 60 cm under the floor - free to blow air from air conditioners. On the right you can already see the room where the raised floor is laid on its legs.

After the building is ready, air conditioners are installed, racks are installed, electricity and SCS are installed, the central row of raised floor tiles is changed to grilles, from which cold air will blow from the air conditioners into the cold corridor. Cold air from this air corridor will be captured by the fans of the servers, run through them and cool. Switches and KVM are placed in racks.

Everyone knows that we regularly have power outages, and our services should work around the clock. Therefore, we provide UPS data centers (uninterruptible power supplies). So when you turn off the external power, our data center will be able to work on batteries for a short time. But electricity is often turned off for many hours. For such cases, each of our data centers is equipped with a diesel generator. The diesel generator runs on diesel fuel and can provide power to the data center for a long time (if you do not forget to bring fuel). Engineers of the Service of the Chief Engineer of the General Affairs Department are responsible for ensuring the operation of diesel generators, air conditioners, and electricity.

For the servers to have a network, they need to provide it. For each data center we lay at least 2 optical channels, and, of course, all our data centers are connected to our Moscow optical ring. This is done to protect against excavators, which for some reason dig in precisely the places where the optical fiber lies. In the queues themselves, the network comes in such switches, only the chassis of which weighs 55 kg, not counting the insides. After that, the network is brought to the switches that are in each rack, and from them it is already routed to the servers. To make it easier to switch and track what is connected and where, patch cords of different colors are used.

It would seem time to put the server? Not right away. Before the server will be installed in the rack, it must be received, unpacked from the box, disassembled to inventory the memory, hard disks and the case itself, then reassembled to be installed in the rack and connected, and all actions must be carefully carried out according to the warehouse program to we knew where and what we had. Similar actions are performed with switches, with KVMs and other equipment that is used in the data center. All these actions are carried out at the warehouse, which is in any data center. The engineers of the data center from the infrastructure department of the operation department are responsible for this. These are very responsible people, who always have to have order in the household. And all the shelves are signed. Even those that are incomprehensible.

Now you can put the server. After installing them, the operating system and the necessary software are installed on them in a semi-automatic mode, which is usually done by duty administrators. After that, the servers are transferred to the operation of system administrators. Sysadmins install what is missing and finally configure the server before putting them into production. The final setup also includes the monitoring setup, which will notify us of problems on the server. Monitoring is monitored round-the-clock by on-duty administrators who notify responsible admins of problems with their servers and are the hands of admins in cases when it is necessary to change the hard drive, connect KVM, or reboot a dead-locked server.
