Digital tandem

A real technology war began on the domestic telecommunications market. Russian provider Yota has signed a contract with Sony for the supply of Vaio laptops equipped with modules for wireless access to 4G Internet. Laptops will go on sale in March.

The contract with Sony was a breakthrough in the formation of a whole pool of the world's leading electronics manufacturers willing to stimulate the development of 4G communications in Russia. Companies from Taiwan Acer, Asus and MSI, the Chinese Lenovo, the Korean Samsung and the Japanese Toshiba, which specifically for Yota market laptops with a WiMAX / Wi-Fi hybrid module, are already participating in this process. The cost of all the presented models is the same as in similar configurations with a simple Wi-Fi module.

WiMAX-communication is characterized by a higher data transfer rate compared to the standards of the second and third generation, so many citizens will probably prefer laptops to mobile phones to access the Internet in traffic jams. Obviously, not everyone will rush to buy laptops and netbooks because of this, but once upon a time nobody heard anything about Wi-Fi. By the way, Yota did not accidentally equip all laptops with two wireless technologies - Wi-Fi and WiMAX. Which of them will prevail is still unclear. There are many examples in history when a progressive and “cool” at first glance standard lost to the old, but well-known. That is how inglorious the confrontation with DVD ended for the Blu-ray format.
