Google almost caught up with Yandex (comScore)
Perhaps the Russian Google is not so losing to Yandex, as we used to think. If you believe the latest statistics from comScore , then these two companies in December 2009 had a quite comparable user audience: 22.7 million and 19.7 million Russians. Mail.ru with 21.7 million is also in the top three Russian sites.
And this despite the fact that all meters like LiveInternet consistently show Google’s share within 34%, while Yandex has about 48% ( here are the LI statistics ). The difference is much more significant. What is the secret?
The secret is that comScore considers transitions not only to Runet sites, but also to English-language resources. Almost no one goes there with Yandex, and Google is a tool familiar to Russians in this matter. That is why the rating of the Russian audience is so different between comScore and LiveInternet.
The second "secret" in the comScore methodology (according to Osnat Zaretski, senior manager for business development in Europe comScore):
The company selected more than 20 thousand unique users in Russia who represent the entire population of the country over 15 years old. These users have a special program installed on computers that monitors human behavior on the Web.
As you know, most other statistical companies use counters.
If the Google audience looks surprisingly large, then comScore statistics have another interesting figure - Odnoklassniki audience. In the same December 2009, it amounted to only 9.6 million people. For comparison, according to the alternative statistical service TNS, in November the monthly audience of this network exceeded 14 million people.
The onset of Google in the Russian market is even stranger, given the good progress of Yandex recently. Over the year, Yandex took the 7th place among the search engines in the world, overtaking Facebook (!) And showing an increase of 91%in December 2008 - December 2009 The number of search queries at Yandex has increased from 992 million to 1.9 billion per month, and this is the best indicator among the ten largest search engines on the Internet. For comparison, Bing processes 4.1 billion requests per month (by the way, in terms of progress, it takes second place after Yandex with 70%).
If we return to comScore statistics, then in the Top 20 of the most popular Russian sites there are other interesting resources, including BitTorrent, Depositfiles.com, and Torrents.ru. Facebook site with 1.2 million Russians was not a leader, but, according to experts, they had already begun to sell banner ads specifically for the Russian audience, and demand for it immediately exceeded supply.
