Russian users of pirated Windows XP will receive automatic notifications

Today, a press release came from Microsoft saying that all users of pirated XP will be asked to install an OS authentication tool.

The current version of WGA Notifications was launched around the world about six months ago. Unlike previous versions of this program, this implementation does not provide a limited functionality mode for detected pirated copies: only a notification and subsequent soft reminders of the existing problem. This is especially important for Russia, in which a significant number of users still have not switched to licensed software and continue to use pirated versions of Windows XP installed by unscrupulous suppliers, not realizing both the fact of using an unlicensed system and the risks that because of this they are exposed. Our task is not to punish all users of pirated software in Russia,

Upon receipt of a notification that the installed version of Windows XP is unlicensed, the user receives comprehensive information about what options exist for acquiring a licensed operating system or legalization solutions. At the same time, the process of their acquisition, specially adapted for Russia in cooperation with local partners, provides a simple mechanism for ordering via the Internet, convenient payment options and delivery throughout Russia.

Internet users of Windows XP with the automatic update retrieval feature enabled will start receiving the WGA Notifications installation module starting December 9, 2009. The process will be stepwise and will take several months until all systems are fully covered.
Installing the WGA Notifications update is optional and is only possible upon acceptance by the user of the license agreement. The WGA Notifications authentication process does not collect data that could be used to identify or contact you.

In general, judging by the press release, users are not expecting anything terrible. At least no one will restrict functionality, but will only remind and force change the desktop background. The only question is how long will it last and will Windows not block completely, say, a month after three reminders? Microsoft
