Double-sided Blu-ray / DVD discs: why so long?

On January 19, 2010, double-sided discs will appear on sale for the first time, with Blu-ray on one side and DVDs on the other. Universal ordered such discs for the Bourne trilogy. Discs will be priced at $ 29.98 - even cheaper than regular Blu-ray, although more expensive than DVD.

This is a great idea, because Blu-ray can’t get wide distribution in any way because of the vicious circle of “few devices -> few films -> it makes no sense to buy a player”. In addition, some do not specifically buy a high-resolution film, because the Blu-ray player is installed only at home, while in a laptop / car, for example, a regular DVD. Double-sided drives should solve this problem.

The popularity of the new product is indicated by huge popularity.combined packages, where two discs are sold in one box: DVD and Blu-ray. Compared with them, the bilateral option is still more convenient (and potentially cheaper).

It is interesting to recall that in the extinct HD DVD format such double-sided discs appeared back in 2007 . It's unbelievable that it took Blu-ray almost three years to adopt a good idea.
