FOSS projects in Russia
Recently we reviewed information on Russian projects for developing open source software for business and found a lot of interesting things. For example, did you know that Russia has an open CIS? There is, it turns out, called Millenium BSA, and the developer has opened the codes for quite some time. At the same time, there is no noise even in the open source software market - it is clear that the guys are sitting in Samara, trying to do at least a local business, resources for normal promotion are probably not enough. It’s not clear, by the way, how businesses are doing - others even put their own open source software on some Oracle and have their own piece of bread and butter in this way. And these seemingly even global partnerships are not observed. Meanwhile, it is precisely with regard to accounting systems that Russian projects, which initially take into account our accounting specifics, are easily beaten by Western ones, especially in small businesses.
On the other hand, some strange holes-gaps appeared in the Russian space of open source software development. Where, one wonders, domestic STR-graphics and modeling? Well, CAD-CAE is a specific narrow market, there is not soon anybody will emerge from the Russian open source software community, if at all. But is it really that nobody in Russia was tempted to write and open a program for 3D animation, just for fun? It keeps silence, doesn’t take anything ashore.
In this sense, the contest "The best free project in Russia", announced by Linux Format magazine, is a very good undertaking. It's not just about the money, although half a million are also not lying on the road and regional developers would not be in the way today. But for the common cause it is no less important that, based on the results of the competition, a map of STR projects of Russia (and neighboring countries) will be drawn up. And then it will be possible to understand that of the Russian free developments it is already quite usable in business and at home (because not only developers, but also satisfied users can submit applications), where to get it and which niches are not occupied yet (if anyone thinks what he would do in his spare time).
