Moscow has become closer

  • From RSS

Today we updated satellite images of Moscow and Moscow region . Their area has become larger, and the quality is better . All images were taken in 2008 - we did not depart from the tradition of annual renewal of satellite coverage of the capital region.

And for a very long time we wanted to tell how the satellite images are added to Yandex.Maps. And tell!

As you know, Yandex does not own a satellite, but uses data from various sources. For example, for cities, we publish photos from two satellites that can shoot with high resolution - Ikonos (shoots with a resolution of 1 meter / pixel) and QuickBird (0.6 meter / pixel). After the region whose pictures we want to place is selected, we formulate a task for shooting or select images in the archive. If the survey is made to order, the satellite during the filming season (for cloudy and snowy Russia it is usually from May to September) tries to capture the desired territory. Satellite operators set the trajectory of its movement so that it flies over the desired location in sunny cloudless weather. The latter, however, is quite difficult to arrange, especially for our country. Surely each of you at least once flew an airplane and looked through the porthole at the ground. Remember the white clouds around? That's it, but the satellite needs to fly and take a picture of the surface when these clouds are gone. It also happens that during the whole shooting season the satellite was not able to shoot the ordered territory, or shot, but not completely.

In general, in case of success, the so-called mosaic is made from the obtained materials. Sometimes it consists of pictures taken on different days and even at different times of the year, for example, in spring and autumn. Particular attention is paid to the places where the images were docked so that the difference between the original frames does not catch the eye and does not interfere with our users.

After “gluing” the pictures into a mosaic, we get a single image, almost ready for placement on our service. A little more technical preparation, and here is this mosaic on Yandex.Maps - admire !
