Symbian Foundation Unveils Platform Plans

Formed last year, the Symbian Foundation consortium is working on an open Symbian platform for next-generation smartphones. Alliance employee David Wood has posted software release information on an official blog .

It turned out that the members of the alliance plan to release two versions of the platform annually. So, by the middle of 2009, Symbian ^ 2 will be ready, created on the basis of the S60 5th Edition Feature Pack 1. The first device with “polished” Symbian ^ 2 will be released at the end of the year. Six months later, Symbian ^ 3 will see the light.
Probably the first handset with Symbian ^ 2 will be the Nokia phone. Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and other vendors will also not be on the sidelines.
