Solar panels in Intel data centers
Intel installed solar panels at its data center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, to test the potential of this type of energy for powering ultra-energy-intensive systems. Of course, for the full power supply of one data center, hectares of solar batteries are needed (to be precise, to obtain 1 MW it is necessary to cover up to 10 hectares with panels), and panels cost from 25 to 30 cents per 1 kW. Of course, such a project would be unprofitable, although there is a data center in the world that is completely powered by solar energy.
Intel plans to receive only a small part of the energy from the Sun - for example, this is important in the spring, when public utility networks are heavily loaded and there is not enough power for everyone. Or as a backup power source.
Near the data center in Rio Rancho, only 64 panels with a total capacity of 10 kW are installed. If the experiment is successful, similar panels will be installed on other data centers of the company. Intel executives talk about the "aggressive solar program."
