    built-in wireless intrusion protection system (WIPS) sensor in Motorola access points has significantly improved security. The technology applied was developed by AirDefense, a leading provider of wireless LAN security products, recently acquired by Motorola. The built-in sensor provides more effective protection of wireless networks from intrusions, and also simplifies the process of their deployment and administration. Users of previously purchased Motorola access points will need to replace the software to upgrade their wireless LANs.

    At each specific point in time, the access point performs any one function: it broadcasts data, or monitors the status of the network. Therefore, competing solutions were limited only to periodic snapshots of the state of the wireless environment, resuming the main function after scanning. In contrast, Motorola access points with an AirDefense sensor use dedicated frequencies for constant - i.e. without any temporary interruptions - monitoring. This method of protection against attacks on wireless networks is much more effective. In addition, the task of fulfilling regulatory requirements is simplified, which reduces the risks for security officials.

    Reduced security architecture complexity

    A traditional secure wireless LAN solution consists of three layers: wired, wireless overlay, and over WIPS. Integrating WIPS and its sensors into wireless components reduces complexity. The solution is more economical and easier to manage.
