A team at Harvard Medical School was able to isolate and examine tiny fragments of collagen proteins from the femur of the Rex tyrannosaurus. Having studied 21 existing species in a similar way, scientists came to the conclusion that dinosaurs have more in common with chickens and ostriches than with alligators.

Until now, the theory of the kinship of birds and dinosaurs was based on the morphological similarity of skeletons.

A similar analysis of the mastodon reveals close ties with modern elephants.
