Multilingual domain names tested successfully

Multilingual domain names are now one step closer to reality, as ICANN said the test for their use was successfully completed.

As you know, at present, domain names can consist of only 37 characters: the Latin alphabet, numbers and hyphens.

Many countries that use their own characters (the same Russia or China) have long been demanding the launch of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). However, there are opponents of multilingual domain names who believe that they will violate the unity of the Internet.

ICANN, the domain name management organization, began conducting IDN trials in October 2006. The test was supposed to show how the root servers would behave.

ICANN said on Wednesday that no problems were observed during testing on a simulated system:
All investigated systems behaved as expected.
