Web 2.0 came to local area networks

    The Irish Computer Society conducted a special study and found out how effectively large commercial companies use the capabilities of their corporate networks. It turned out that the vast majority of them (80%) themselves admit that they do not use all the intranet features as an internal communication tool. The survey involved more than 200 Irish companies.

    Ireland is one of the most computerized countries in Europe, so the results of this study are probably also applicable to Russia, even more so. If Ireland does not use the intranet 100%, then what can we say about us.

    The results of the study showed that the most popular tools that are used for internal communications in large companies are:

    * electronic document management;
    * electronic training courses;
    * contact management.

    The most popular file format is the Microsoft Office format. For full-text search on the net, corporate search engines Google (1st place) and Microsoft are most often used. The most common OS is Windows. Quite often, in conjunction with Microsoft servers, Oracle DBMSs are used.

    Irish experts note that corporate networks are increasingly using Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs and wikis. Moreover, in some places web applications are starting to be used as an alternative to standard office programs. For example, this applies to webmail as an alternative to the standard Outlook program from MS Office.

    As for the improvement of the intranet, there is a huge space for development: 86% of respondents said they intend to increase the functionality of their local networks in the near future.
