McCall on the middle ground between digital and traditional technology

Caroline McCall, Managing Director of the English Guardian newspaper, speaking at a session of the 59th World Newspaper Congress in Moscow on newspaper business innovations, spoke of the need to find a middle ground between digital and traditional technologies.

She talked about how her publication managed to increase circulation due to a number of measures aimed at changing the format of the newspaper in parallel with the use of the Internet. The key to success was the reduction in size, a more convenient arrangement of photos and text on the page, the heading of the newspaper and providing readers with the opportunity to participate in the discussion of materials.

According to her, 12 thematic blogs were created on the website of the publication. For example, one of them consists entirely of readers' feedback on their travels, the other is devoted to comments on paper number materials, and part of them is printed daily on a newspaper’s page dedicated to this purpose.

McCall also said that the publication has an idea to equip all foreign correspondents with digital cameras so that they can make small video reports and post them on the newspaper’s website.
