Large supercomputer to be built on Elbrus processors in Russia

Elbrus processors have achieved performance that allows them to be used in the creation of supercomputers, according to the developers of the company MCST. Previously, domestic CPUs were used only in desktop computers and servers, only a few small cabinet-size systems were built. However, a new project with a budget of more than 1 billion rubles is a full-fledged supercomputer, which will certainly be included in the list of the Top 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world, Kommersant reports .

Experts familiar with the project's progress told Kommersant that this is a “long-term military-industrial project, one of the parts of which is the creation of a supercomputer on the Russian Elbrus processor”. One of the project implementers is the Institute of Software Systems named. A. K. Aylamazyan.

Now there are preparatory work on the project.

The information on participation in the project was confirmed by the director of the Institute of Software Systems Sergey Abramov. He said that now "a large project is being formed to solve a specific applied problem in the defense industry, and the creation of a supercomputer on the Russian processor is one of the parts of this project."

In other words, a computer is built for a specific military mission. According to experts, it is ideal to use a supercomputer in the military-industrial complex for the development and simulation of armaments: “In combat conditions, it is necessary to conduct a huge amount of calculations, process video, audio and sensory data. All this is difficult to do without the participation of a cluster of supercomputers, ”said Sergey Levashov, head of the business analysis center of the Ramaks Group of Companies.
