Entropic - New Distributed Package Registry for Node.js

I will go straight to the main point. CJ Silverio, a former CTO of NPM Inc., announced yesterday a new distributed registry for Node.js packages

Why is it important? Almost every one of us uses the NPM registry from us, but not many of us know that the private company NPM Inc. manages this registry. And to support a centralized registry, money and considerable money are needed. The company earns some of this money as hosting private packages, and the other part is the money of venture investors. And investors want to repulse their investments. Go big or go home, as they say in the Valley.

Apparently, in order to start making money, the founder of Isaac Schlueter hired a new CEO , and he himself went to the position of Chier Product Officer. Soon enough , a wave of layoffs swept through the companyand many took it very ambiguously, because the main motto of NPM is Nice Peoples Matter. People were fired without prior notice even to their immediate manager. What the real reasons were is unknown, but the fact that some of the dismissed people lost their compensation but refused to sign the NDA for non-disclosure is indicative.

The situation has turned out in which the most important registry of the js-ecosystem is managed by a company with a not-so-clear policy. Apparently, this fact prompted to act and finally create a distributed registry that is independent of anyone but ourselves.

The project has just begun. All the code was written in 5 weeks by Chris Dickenson and CJ Silverio (CJ Silverio) and provides for now the basic functionality: a registry and a cli-tool for accessing it.

The rest is in our hands.
