We invite you to the Droid Party - a meeting devoted to practical issues of developing Android applications and devices

On March 14, the Yandex.Telephone team will share their work experience in the Yandex Yandex Moscow office. Participants will tell you what difficulties they encountered, what bumps they filled and what useful conclusions they made. The meeting will begin at 18:30, registration is open here .

We planned four performances: about memory consumption, fragmentation, integration of the voice assistant into the Phone, and changing system settings. There will be time for communication.

Talk about memory control

Our optimization experience will interest those who want to control the consumption of resources without losing quality and release applications that are available even on weak devices. Alexander Starchenko will tell you how the tasks that confronted the team after the release of Android Go were solved. The lightweight version of the operating system presented increased requirements for pre-installed applications - the size and memory used. We had to keep within the narrow framework of these requirements. The team carried out a number of optimizations and decided to seriously change the architecture of the application. The meeting participants will find out what steps we have taken.

Consider the problems of fragmentation

Those who suffered from fragmentation will try to help Andrei Makeev . He will share knowledge about the API of Android devices. Fragmentation is considered one of the main difficulties of Android development. Almost every manufacturer modifies Android to suit their needs, and vendor implementations can seriously differ from the original AOSP. Let's try to figure out whether it is possible to benefit from the individual characteristics of various firmware and how to do it.

Let's talk about the implementation of voice assistant

Evgeny Dolgiy will share the experience of integrating Alice’s voice assistant into Yandex.Phone. The team had the task to make the assistant run from any screen and from the device’s sleep mode. Participants figured out what opportunities the framework provides for this. In parallel, we taught Alice to be friends with Google Assistant and solved other problems, which will also be discussed at the meeting.

Let's discuss modifications to system settings

We are also waiting for developers who are ready to provide users with access to the settings of new system applications and hardware features. Nikolay Pakhomov will talk about working with system settings . Together with him, we will consider different ways to create a new settings item, their pros and cons. A small bonus will be information on how to make the added settings indexable for search.
