Compaq LTE 5000 Notebook, Part Two and a Half - Bonus
Compaq LTE 5000 laptop, part one - getting to know
Compaq LTE 5000 laptop, part two - about flaws and their treatment The
part about the OS and games is still being composed, I suspect that it will grow into something more than just a story about the launch of old toys .
But somehow, by itself, I got a little bonus material in which I will talk about the docking station for Compaq LTE 5000 - although I don’t have it, but it’s an interesting thing.

I don’t have a docking station. There was an option to buy a laptop with a dock, but it was an American auction that took place during my vacation and I didn’t have time with bids there. Yes, and shipping from America would then have flown a pretty penny, the laptop, along with the dock and packaging, weighs almost 10 kilograms. But the compacs have interesting docks, because I want to show at least in other people's pictures.
Although at first about terminology, because, as it turned out, some words do not know this and are interested in “why is it necessary?”.
Docking station for a laptop - docking station - a stationary design with a set of ports, which on the one hand connects the stationary equipment (mouse, keyboard, monitor, wired network, printers, scanners), and on the other hand (through a special connector) - a laptop . Come to the workplace, connect the laptop to the docking station and it works as a system unit with full desktop peripherals.
There is also the term port replicator - functionally the same as the dock, just smaller.
For Compaq LTE there were two types of docks, MultiBay Expansion Base and MultiBay ISA Expansion Base. They differed in the fact that in the second one it was still possible to put a full-sized ISA-board. Full-sized - this is something like this in length:

List of connectors that were on the docking stations:
Outwardly, both docks are almost the same, only the ISA version is slightly higher.
As already said, I don’t have the dock itself, because I pulled pictures from the Internet where I found it.
This is a simple dock next to a laptop.

Laptop in the dock. On the left and right are visible indicators of disk activity and battery charge, respectively. It was possible to charge four batteries at the same time - two in the laptop and two in the dock. Or connect three drives. I doubt the truth about the three drives, but three CD-ROMs are no problem. The IrDA port is visible on the left under the indicators, and the laptop’s power button is on the right.

The laptop in the dock was designed to work with the lid closed, anyway you have an external monitor connected. Given the amount of video memory of the laptop (1 megabyte), an external monitor could get a resolution of 1024x768, 256 colors.

Rear connectors From left to right - mouse-keyboard, sound, network connectors, MIDI / GAME-port, monitor, LPT, COM. In the niche you can see a certain “MPEG and TV Video Adapter connector”.

I practically have no information about the adapter itself, I only realized that there was an MPEG decoder (mpeg1, most likely) and TV outputs - S-Video and composite. It looked something like this:

Boca. On the left, power was connected and there was one of the multibay slots. On the right is another multibay and two PCMCIA card slots. Taking into account the laptop connectors, it was possible to put four cards. The lever on the right is to disconnect the computer from the dock.

Also, the dock should have included a cover.

A monitor could be placed on top of it, because on the desktop the design took up almost as much space as a regular desktop, the laptop did not lie on the table somewhere away.

Well, probably all I can say about the dock.
Pictures are torn from a search on pictures in google and lots on ebay, so I won’t give direct links.
Who cares about the interior of the dock, you can read about them in the service manual . Photos are not there, but the schemes give some idea.
There is also a video on YouTube with a review of the laptop and the docking station, but it is very dark, and the speaker is very tongue-tied and illegible speaking, so I won’t insert this video here.

- PS / 2 mouse connector
- External keyboard connector (also PS / 2)
- Monitor Connector (VGA)
- RJ-45 and BNC network connectors.
- Two slots for PCMCIA Type III cards
- 3.5 mm headphone / speaker jack
- Line input
- IrDA
- Battery Indicators
- Hard Drive Activity Indicators
- Stereo speakers
- ISA slot (only on MultiBay ISA Expansion Base)
- More powerful speakers for Compaq PremierSound audio system (MultiBay ISA Expansion Base only)
