Cuba will have open access points next month

Cuba is becoming more open, and the Government of Liberty Island is planning to gradually make life easier for its citizens. Among other plans is the creation of a national network of Internet access points throughout the island. There will be 35 such points in total, they will be created by the state telecommunications company.

According to the authors of the project, this solution allows to reduce the cost of access for local residents by at least half. Now the planned price for one hour of work on the Web is $ 2. True, this is still more expensive than most citizens can afford, but still better than nothing.

By the way, many services are now paying attention to Cuba. So, after softening relations between the United States and Freedom Island, Netflix offered local residents a subscription to the service. The cost of a monthly access starts at $ 8, depending on the conditions. And this despite the fact that as of 2013, the average wage here is $ 20.

Earlier, the state-owned company ETECSA opened an access point in Santiago de Cuba with a price of $ 4.5 per hour. It is also worth remembering that not all Cubans have smartphones or other devices with Wi-Fi. Despite the cost, the access point is very actively used by local residents.

As for access speed, it is planned to provide 1 Mbps per one connected. In principle, it’s quite normal. One access point can support the simultaneous operation of 50-100 users.

Over the past few years, the government has opened several dozen Internet cafes, launched a national mail service that is available to a million or so local mobile device users. Thus, the Cuban government does not in word but in deed confirms its intention to provide access to the Network for its residents. According to the plan, by 2020, Cuba is going to provide half of households with access to the Network.
