Yandex Finnish data center will heat 5,000 households

It is well known that servers, especially powerful ones, emit a lot of heat during operation. And in a data center with thousands of heat servers - a huge amount, and it has to be diverted from the equipment. Various methods are used for this, but heat, in most cases, is wasted. True, in some cases, thermal energy is still utilized and used for useful purposes.

This is the case in the data center of Yandex, which operates in the Finnish city of Mäntsälä. The Russian company has entered into an agreement with the local energy company Mäntsälän Sähkö, according to which the heat from the Yandex data center will be used to heat buildings in this village.

According to the Tekniikka & Talous portal, the thermal energy generated by the data center is enough to heat 5,000 households that are connected to the central heating system. As for the heating infrastructure, it will be handled by the Calefa company operating in the city of Hollola. Representatives of this company argue that their technology, which allows the use of the heat of the data center to heat homes, is currently one of a kind.

Finnish experts argue that this heat can be used as an alternative to the thermal energy obtained as a result of the operation of local thermal power plants currently operating on Russian natural gas. Such a replacement will significantly reduce the level of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the economic indicators of such a project are not presented - it is not yet clear how expensive the thermal energy will be for the final consumer, and how much heat from the data center is cheaper or more expensive than the heat obtained by burning natural gas.

It is worth noting that Yandex acquired the plot of land in Mäntsälä in 2013 for 1.5 million euros. The total land area is 8 hectares.
