Popcorn Time developers plan to leave for i2p

One of the most active forks of the Popcorn Time project , popcorn-time.se , was considering moving to the i2p network. Last summer, the project, taking care of the anonymity of its users, the project began to provide them with a free VPN built into the application. However, by now the capabilities of the VPN provider have been exhausted due to the great popularity of the project.

As the project team commented on its current state: “The user base has grown so fast, and continues to grow, that we do not have time. Now only a small part of our users can use a VPN at the same time. While we are taking the first steps, and are testing the ability to build in i2p support. ”

The developers of Popcorn Time are hoping to use their large user base to support the development of i2p and thus increase the speed of data transfer through it for all its participants, including their users. In addition to transferring films, it is planned to distribute software updates through p2p networks due to the vulnerability of a system with one central server.

The i2p network has been around for more than 10 years, but has not yet received widespread public acceptance - such as Tor. Unlike the latter, she does not seek to be an anonymizer for visiting regular sites. Instead, the network is aimed at creating hidden services within itself. In addition, unlike Tor, i2p is fundamentally designed to transfer large amounts of data. In particular, file sharing is already running on the network.

Popcorn Time is a project that has released an application that allows you to watch movies directly from torrents for free. After a brief success, the project was canceled due to claims from the MPAA. But immediately after this, several forks separated from the project.
