Apple will build a data center for $ 2 billion

Apple plans to spend $ 2 billion on re-equipping a sapphire crystal factory in a data center, Bloomberg reports .

The building is located in Mesa (Arizona). With an area of 121,000 m 2 it will be the largest data center Apple. And, probably, one of the largest data centers in the world.

Apple says the data center will operate entirely on renewable energy. This is also a good thing for the local economy: 150 employees are planning to employ the company, and another 300-500 people will be temporarily employed in construction and related projects. “The multi-billion dollar project is one of the biggest investments we have ever made,” Apple said.

True, if we recall the sapphire crystal factory, we have to state a clear failure. Apple was never able to establish production, and after all, the plant planned to employ 2,000 people, that is, an order of magnitude more than it will be in the data center. Probably, the authorities of Arizona were very disappointed with this turn of events.

Apple was planning to build a sapphire glass factory in collaboration with GT Advanced Technologies. But later it turned out that GT Advanced Technologies was not able to arrange the production of such a large volume of products, and soon the company went bankrupt (having previously received $ 578 million in debt from Apple in November 2013). But the plant could become one of the key elements in the supply chain of components. Located in the US, it should have provided enough glass for all Apple gadgets.

One way or another, but the additional data center Apple also does not hurt.
