Mimo baby - the first pancake ...?

As an administrator, you can’t help but become interested in the modern capabilities of monitoring infants, but at the same time try to slightly simplify your life at this tense moment.

Preparing to meet my second son, time was spent studying options, as a result, one of the Mimo baby monitor systems was purchased and tested in practice.

Maybe my experience is useful to someone.

The issue of monitoring infants has already been raised on the hub, for example: On health: 5 gadgets for the smallest .

In August last year, I studied the systems announced at that time:
    - Clip on MonBaby clothes - Collect pre-orders, not ready.
    - Sock Owlet - Collect pre-orders, not ready.
    - bandage on the legSproutling - At the time of the selection in August 2014 - only pre-orders. For today (February 2015) all beta is sold out, there are no new releases yet.
    - Bodik Mimo baby - the only system available for purchase, on sale for about a year now.

They sell Mimo baby only in the USA, so you need to use some kind of forwarder, such as hiss, to get it here.

    Kit
we received just such a box:

    .

    Inside the box:
    - 3 of the smallest kimonos (0-3 months).
    - A base for charging (it is she who sends data via wifi).
    - “turtle” - a module connected to a kimono.
    - micro-USB cable to power the base.
    - audio cable (used for initial setup of the base on a wifi network).
    - instruction.

    .

The turtle sensor and the seat on the kimono.
On the turtle, the contacts are made of magnets, so it sits in the landing nest and keeps there quite confidently.
You can see two strips of sensors covered by rubber printing, although what exactly they monitor is not entirely clear.

    .

On the reverse side: it can be seen that between the strips of the sensors and the child there are already 2 layers of fabric.

    .

The reverse side of the bug and the base (serials jammed, as it is for them connect sensors in the Annex):

    .

"Kimono", hb fabric of decent quality. It can be machine washed, but you can not squeeze it with an iron too.

    .

    Application
The mimo application exists only for android and iPhone. There is no universal web access.
The application is installed from the market.

    .

After starting and adding the id of the turtle and base, you can observe the following:
The main screen is “Live monitor”, on which:
    - Status (in this case, “charging”)
    - Breath monitor
    - Sound button.

    .

The second tab is “Timeline”. It shows conditional graphs of a child’s sleep.

    .

Below the graph, you can deploy alerts and see those events:

    .

The last tab, "the Settings" you can see the status of a "bug", its battery ...

    .

    And set up alerts:

    .

    Use experience
Actual use showed a number of flaws. Example: a baby turtle shows “normal temperature” and its breathing, but the status is still “charging”.

    .

On the tablet it looks the same. But there is no landscape mode, you have to look upright.
In this “screenshot” there is an almost perfect sinusoid - here you can definitely say that the baby is sleeping.

    .

The nuances of use are as follows:
    - The radius of the turtle from the base is less than a meter, already from 50 cm the signal begins to weaken and disappear.
Even when shifting to a changing table - the data stops flowing, not to mention feeding and motion sickness.
    - It is not clear when and how the status changes.
For the first few days I could only see "Asleep and on Back", even if the child had woken up for a couple of minutes, actively moving his hands and starting to cry.
Taking pictures for the article - received the status of "Charging", although the turtle was on a child. I had to poke her at the base and back, so that the status changed to normal.
After writing in support, the status began to change sometimes, but a clear detective did not work out.
    - The breath monitor is not indicative.
If a sinusoid is guaranteed to be a dream, but not a sinusoid, that's all.
Visually large peaks and pauses can be either a tossing or falling asleep child, or already woken up and crying with might and main.
    - Apparently the temperature sensor is of low accuracy, otherwise why only make the gradation “above normal” - “normal” - “below normal”.
    - Timeline is not updated in real time. The graph appears apparently once a day (over the past day).
Wrote in support, now (it seems) has begun to appear after each "dream", only the border of "sleep" is again not very well defined.
Also, the scale in the graph is not signed, so it is not possible to understand which range corresponds to the column.
    - Alert is only a log entry (under the graph in Timeline). Nothing blinks, does not buzz, you will not receive any “notifications” in the usual sense of the word.
    - On android, every time you run the mimo application, you must enter a username and password. At least there is no “remember password” checkbox.
Support said they were aware of this problem and might solve it.
    - Listening to the sound “Listen” comes with a huge amount of noise and crackling, through which not only the sniffling of a child is heard, but even a conversation at an average volume.

Support suggested that due to the fact that the server is far "and in general we are not working outside the US, although we are preparing to enter the European market." It seems to me a purely technical problem with the isolation of the microphone in the database.

    .

A video showing everything that is available:
    - The child’s breathing is audible and the breathing monitor is visible
    - Sleep and alert graphs
    - Setup
    - Listening to the sound from the room (noise and crackle, actually).

An example of a bad wake-up detection: youtu.be/IhTrB5QhPj8

    Summary
From my point of view, the device turned out to be practically useless. The system does not solve those tasks that could simplify the life of parents:
    - There is no warning that the child is waking up or waking up.
    - On the monitor of breath it is impossible to tell whether the child woke up or not.
    - Listening to sound is useless due to noise and crackling.
Unlike mimo, a regular baby monitor (camera + sound) will allow you to track the moment you wake up with 99% accuracy so that you can reach the baby before he cries.

The device could be of practical use: notify about waking up, plan sleep time, monitor temperature and position. But now nothing of this can be done.

The only relatively useful feature - sleep schedules, is poorly implemented.
It would be possible to make a fixed scale of 0: 00-24: 00, then you can compare sleep on different days and roughly imagine what time the child sleeps in time.
It would be possible to make a ryl-time sleep scale of high accuracy so that we could “predict” it, for example, if the child is now 5 minutes in the deep sleep stage, then we have another 10..20 minutes of rest.

    These are “expectations vs reality”.
PS I ask you to forgive the mistakes, I manage to sleep for three hours, write about them in private.
