Kung Fury-funded comedy comedy funded through Kickstarter

On May 28, the world premiere of the short film Kung Fury took place. The film was released free of charge thanks to the support of visitors to the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. The film was shot by Swedish director David Sandberg, who also wrote the script for the film and played a major role in it.

Although crowdfunded cinema is an unusual phenomenon in itself, this film is doubly unusual. In fact, this is a kind of creative “skit” dedicated to the romance of the 80s. Characteristic lurid clothes, synth-pop music, police action films, martial arts films, the first personal computers and machine games (from the time of the first Tron movie), elements of Indian cinema, fantasy action films about the Vikings and even dinosaurs - all mixed up in this happy chaos.

The main characters are super-policeman Kung Fury, hacker Hackerman and Adolf Hitler. Kung Fury is trying with the help of Hackerman to save the world from Hitler. The plot does not have a special semantic load, but in the retelling it sounds, as the work of a person who has run out of the right pills. There is also the main character, who received superpowers due to the simultaneous bite of a cobra and a lightning strike; Hitler, having appropriated the title of Kung Fuhrer and traveling in time; Vikings shooting dinosaurs from multi-barrel machine guns; a hacker hacking space and time, and much more.

The film can cause various emotional reactions - from slight bewilderment to the need for short-term hospitalization, but most people who have embraced the culture of the 80s, the film should be plunged into a state of nostalgic tenderness. Music, a color palette, characteristic stupid jokes, styling under the hindrance of VHS technology, character templates and plot - all this creates an ideal parody of what was happening about 30 years ago.

For a preliminary immersion in the atmosphere, you can study the advertising of laptop computers of the 1980s and 1990s. The hacker’s work on computers of the MicroBee brand (apparently, the Microbee 32K IC) and the use of the Power Glove game controller for the Nintendo set-top box as a hacker’s tool are especially pleasing . She was released in 1989 and was the first controller for games, tracking the position of the player’s hand in space.

Those who can’t allocate half an hour of free time can watch a wonderful video clip with the song True Survivor - the main musical theme of the film, performed by famous television actor and producer, star of the 80s David Hasselhof. The clip uses frames from the movie.

The project on Kickstarter started in December 2013. The author requested a sum of $ 200,000, but received a little more than $ 630,000.
