For the first time in Russia at the Robotics Olympiad will be held drone competitions
From June 23 to 25, 589 people from 50 regions of the country will come to Innopolis University at the All-Russian Robotics Olympiad. The competitions are divided into 8 categories, two of which are new - autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle competitions and robotic tetris.
In one of the competitions, participants need to assemble and program an autonomous robot that can fly in a limited space of the room. The drone must complete the tasks of detecting and delivering cargo, accurately flying through control points, flying around obstacles. The task is performed offline, without the participation of the pilot. Modern industrial companies are now working on the same issues.
Head of the Laboratory of Intelligent Robotic Systems Alexander Klimchik:
“The main difficulty lies in maintaining the balance of the aircraft and clearly following a given trajectory. Additional difficulties arise when the aircraft must avoid obstacles in a different horizontal position. Participants in such competitions develop skills in piloting aircraft, learn in practice the basic laws of physics and find new structural and software solutions for aircraft, which can then be implemented in serious projects. ”
The landfill for aircraft is presented in the form of a cube with four-meter faces, covered with a protective net. Inside the cube there are special markings, artificial obstacles and colored loads.
“Aircraft can be of different designs: airplanes, propeller devices (helicopters and multicopters), flywheels and airships. We have no restrictions on the platform used, so the participants decide for themselves what to make devices from. Size - up to 1 meter in each projection, weight - up to 500 grams, speed - up to 10 meters per second. At the robotics Olympiad in our country, such drone competitions will be held for the first time, ”says Alexei Khabibullin, Head of the Design Olympiad Department at Innopolis University.
The overall theme of this year’s All-Russian Robotics Olympiad is “Sustainable Development”. Participants will present robots to the judges who will help return stray rare animals to their habitat, clean the city of greenhouse gases and build turbines in a wind farm.
Olympians will compete for medals in the nominations: "Nature-oriented tourism"; “Carbon neutrality”; “Clean and renewable energy”; TetraStack; "Football robots"; “Robots for sustainable development”; "Personal intelligent robotic systems to ensure a comfortable life"; “Manipulators: sorting”; “Localization: map”; SLAM (positioning by autonomous devices on an unknown map); "Automotive", "Water" and "Aircraft Intelligent Robotic Systems".
In the category of "Automotive Intelligent Robotic Systems" robots compete with a computer vision system. In real time, robots must analyze the traffic situation at the training ground taking into account urban conditions: markings, signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings.
“The main challenge is to respond to the traffic situation in real time. The algorithm must, in a high degree of reliability, recognize traffic signs and read traffic signals. In fact, these are the same tasks that manufacturers of modern unmanned vehicles solve. The Tetrastack competition also uses a computer vision system. She evaluates the color and configuration of the figures, and, based on this information, the robot fills the form with these figures. Autonomous robots for a limited time must collect several solid lines from a set of cubes of different configurations and colors. This is a robotic tetris game - a new task of increased complexity, ”comments Alexei Khabibullin.
Innopolis University has been conducting the All-Russian Robotics Olympiad since 2014. Last year, 557 children from 51 regions of the country gathered at the site of an IT university. The winners of the Olympiad participated in the federal training camps on the basis of the university, where the Russian team was formed for the World Robot Olympiad. At international competitions in the Indian capital New Delhi, our athletes won 4 medals in the "Robot Football", "Creative" and "Basic" categories. In 2017, the finals of the World Robot Olympiad will be held in Costa Rica.
