Just the other day Eric Stromberg, a former co-owner of the Oyster book service, sold a little over a year ago by Google, spoke about a matrix that will help you find an idea for a new startup. The very idea of ​​creating such a matrix seemed extremely interesting to many. Eric’s post on his blog on Medium provoked an extensive discussion and aroused interest in the world media. “I met a lot of people who were interested in creating their own company, but who did not have a brilliant idea that they would be ready to work on for the next five to ten years.
In general, it seems to me that it is wiser to be patient and not to spare time to find an idea that would capture you - that market or that opportunity, to abandon which is simply unthinkable. A little patience in the short term will save you a lot of time in the long run.

However, as I found out, a good way to find this idea is to get acquainted with a wide range of different markets until some opportunity or mission attracts your attention. Of course, it is from this moment that the main work begins: researching the market, studying its history, dialogue with consumers, identifying the pain points of an idea to make sure that it is really worthwhile.

To help you with a brainstorming session, I have compiled a matrix that outlines the various consumer markets, as well as those tactics that a company can apply to launch a unique product on a particular market. Thanks to Chris Dixon , who taught me how to work with this format several years ago.

This matrix covers the opportunities built on customer interaction, but if there is interest, I will make a version for B2B. This format can be used even for a single market - for example, media - to reveal a wider range of opportunities.

In some cells, I inserted examples of startups that fit the theme. The list, of course, is incomplete (and some companies could be included in several categories) - I gave examples of existing companies only so that the ideas did not seem abstract and it was easier to build connections.
