How many lives have electromomas, old clothes and bottle caps?

We at ABBYY try to bring benefits not only to business and people, but also to our planet. For a long time already in the office and outside it we follow several rules that help preserve nature: it is more economical to use paper, to hand over old batteries and energy-saving light bulbs, to participate in community work days. Our business lives and develops: employees offer new ideas, and the company picks them up and helps them to implement. In this post we will describe what eco-initiatives are in ABBYY and what results it brings. And we will share with you information where you can hand over various materials for recycling.

    Paper, give up!

ABBYY's intelligent technologies reduce the amount of paper in the office: we translate them into electronic form and extract valuable data from them. Our company tries to set an example for others and use less paper, and all unnecessary documents, forms and prints to give for recycling. By the way, next to each printer there is an instruction on what to do with used papers.

ABBYY adopted simple rules for not wasting paper: print drafts on the other side of already used sheets or on both sides of one sheet, collect several pages of text on one A4 whenever possible and make copies of several small documents on one page. We call them "beaver instructions", they hang next to the printers. Watch them

On each floor there are containers for the collection of no longer relevant documents and magazines, used notebooks, old calendars and cards. For a month they collect about 30 kg of waste paper. In addition, once a year in the warehouse we carry out an inventory of old magazines and cardboard boxes - this is almost half a ton of materials for recycling!

Of course, in the scale of organizations that export waste paper, 500 kg is a bit. And not all processing centers are ready to come to our office in Otradnoe and pick up such a small portion of this “good”. But so far we have been lucky: we have always managed to find companies that are ready to take away recycled materials, regardless of its weight.

Interesting fact # 1 : With the introduction of our technologies, VTB Bank is planning to save 59 million rubles for the purchase of paper for three years .

Interesting fact # 2 : ABBYY's bookkeeping uses the ABBYY FlexiCapture platform and spends less paper on photocopying documents, because it immediately scans the originals and puts the data into the computer.

    Eco stand

In 2016, on the fifth floor of our office, an eco-stand appeared - the center of gravity of nature conservationists at ABBYY. Here we have already collected 10 types of waste for recycling: paper, cardboard, four types of plastic, bottle caps, batteries, energy-saving lamps and end-of-life home appliances. And colleagues bring here unnecessary books, toys, jewelry and other things that can find a second life, migrated to other employees.

Back in ABBYY, metal and glass are collected separately, containers for them are located on the street behind the building.

Interesting fact # 3 : Find on the map separate collection points for garbage in your area.

    Good caps

Since March 2017, employees have offered the company to join the Good Lids campaign of the Volunteers to Help Orphans Charitable Foundation. So we started to collect plastic bottle caps, we rent more than 2 kg per month! The cost of a plastic cap and a bottle is almost the same, but it is much more convenient to assemble the caps: they have no sharp edges, they take up little space and are less expensive to transport. They go to the EcoTechnologies plastics processing plant , and for the collected caps he transfers funds to a charitable foundation.

Interesting fact # 4 : After processing, lids are used to make useful things: for example, plastic containers and coasters for office supplies.

Interesting fact # 5 : Every month we collect about 10-15 kg of plastic of all kinds.

Interesting fact # 6 : When we were preparing to celebrate the birthday of the company, our colleagues suggested collecting lids for drinking water bottles. The catering company supported us, and as a result we transferred more than 3 kg of caps for recycling.

    The second life of batteries

We hand over the batteries to the contractor, who takes them to the Chelyabinsk factory " Megapolisresurs " - the only battery recycling company in Russia. In the near future, we will cooperate directly with the plant. He recently launched the Boxy service to collect and transport waste.

    We hand over electrical engineering

An old player, a broken mobile phone, a non-working iron and a burnt-out chip are only part of what employees bring for recycling. In addition, an inventory takes place in the IT department every year, and old computers and monitors are sent to the “new life”. Two companies help us to take this electrolyte to us: the Sphere of Ecology and PetroMax. In 2016, we lost 52 kg, and in 2017 - already three times as much, 150 kg. In 2016, our colleagues visited the PetroMaks plant in Lobnya and learned that a variety of equipment and electronics, including aircraft components and automobile engines, are subject to processing. Thanks to the feedback from colleagues about the excursion, the action on recycling old equipment in the office was even more successful!

Interesting fact # 7 : every three months “ PetroMax»Carries out an action on the free export of electrolome from the population in Lobnya and nearby areas. This year, you can pass the unnecessary equipment in June, September and December.

    We organize Saturday work!

All trips to voluntary work days are voluntary, and ideas for them are usually suggested by our enterprising and resourceful employees. For example, in 2014, we helped the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences destroy dangerous plants, hogweed , until they grew.

In 2016, we held a volunteer cleanup at the V.M. Vasnetsov . First, we visited the artist’s house and studio and listened to a fascinating excursion about his life. For example, did you know that Vasnetsov participated in the painting of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev and other Orthodox churches, and that his house in Moscow was built according to his own sketches and drawings? After the tour, we cleaned up last year’s foliage, painted the fence, loosened the ground and sawed dry branches.

In April of this year, our employees went to work on SaturdayAbramtsevo : after a traditional excursion, colleagues spent more than three hours in the fresh air, collected about 80 bags of garbage, and then rested, drank tea with cakes and talked.

    Cannot be thrown away, reused

What do you do with unnecessary clothes that are in good condition, but you don’t wear them? Since 2016, on the sixth floor, first appeared one, and then two containers of the Charity Shop to collect such clothes. The number of people willing to donate old dresses and skirts, jackets and turtlenecks, jeans and T-shirts is growing every year. There are those who pursue their wardrobe every season.

A part of the collected items is sent by the charity store for sale, and a part is handed over to poor and large families, and it sends completely unsuitable clothes for recycling, after sorting them out.

Every two weeks a car arrives at our office and removes the contents of containers. In a month we donate 100 kg of things.

    To work by bike

ABBYY employees come to the office by bike all year round, and even winter is no exception. So that their trips were pleasant, comfortable and safe, there are two nice spacious cycle parkings next to the office, and every April we invite the outdoor service "Velomedic" to us. The office has showers and locker rooms, so employees can comfortably get to work even from afar. And every May, bicycle enthusiasts participate in the city's rally “ To work on a bicycle ”, and we give them small useful gifts for this.

    ABBYY kitchen secrets

Since 2015, we have been using only ceramic plates and mugs in our cozy kitchens: it is eco-friendly, convenient, and very homely. We at ABBYY are convinced that disposable items are bad. Thanks to the system of flowing water filtration in kitchens, it is not necessary to install automatic machines with plastic bottles. Clean drinking water can be drunk from the tap, and can be poured into reusable bottles for coolers. And recently we stopped putting disposable plastic cups at the coolers. Instead, we use mugs from the kitchen.

Next to the kitchens, you can take the empty TetraPak packages . According to our calculations, the ABBYY team in the Moscow office drinks about 10 packets of milk a day, and 300 drinks a month. In addition, employees often bring bags from home to hand them over at work.

Interesting fact # 8 : The Tetra Pak box consists of paper, polyethylene and aluminum. Eco-pens, writing paper, paper for corrugating and cardboard are made from recycled boxes.

    Instead of conclusion

To protect the environment, it is not necessary to refuse the benefits of civilization. Just think, before you print another document, throw out a plastic bottle, ask at the checkout for a new plastic bag for products or disposable cups for soda. It's great that there are things that can be reused, because it brings not only benefit, but also the pleasure of belonging to the protection of our cozy green planet.
