For example, in this article we talked about the effect of RAM frequency on the performance of Ryzen processors. And here a large-scale study was conducted along with the Intel platform. And each time we argued that high-frequency memory is an important component in a computer. In this case it does not matter in which: gaming or professional.

    However, there is an obvious fact: a productive computer device should not be completely impersonal. Of course, the speed and reliability of the product are still at the forefront, but many manufacturers are trying to surprise their fans with something original and unusual.

    The Computex 2018 exhibition that took place in early June (you must have watched the announcements from this event) clearly showed that 2018 is the year of colorful gaming systems. Without exaggeration, we declare that in Taipei hundreds of computer cases equipped with transparent walls were shown. And along with them - thousands of components, having in its composition the backlight. One can argue for a long time, one can be indignant, but the fact remains: bright, memorable PCs are a powerful trend of 2018. So most people like it.

    It is for fans of the backlight company Kingston introduced a productive RAM Hyper X Predator RGB .

    At the moment, on sale you will find three sets of RAM HyperX Predator RGB , which nevertheless operate at an effective frequency of 2933 MHz. The unit module HX429C15PB3A / 8 has a capacity of 8 GB. The two- and four-channel HX429C15PB3AK2 / 16 and HX429C15PB3AK4 / 32 kits have a total capacity of 16 and 32 GB, respectively. It is logical that the latest kit is designed for the most sophisticated AMD and Intel platforms: TR4 (Ryzen Threadripper processors) and LGA2066 (Kaby Lake-X and Skylake-X processors). At an effective frequency of 2933 MHz, the modules operate with basic delays of 15-17-17 at a supply voltage of 1.35 V.

    By default, the HyperX Predator RGB kitruns with JEDEC features: with frequent 2400 MHz with timings 17-17-17. In order for a whale to work at the declared frequency, it is necessary to activate its XMP profile, which is very easy to do in the motherboard BIOS. In addition, the RGB-backlit memory is equipped with a second XMP-profile, when enabled, the modules operate at an effective frequency of 2666 MHz with delays of 15-17-17 at a voltage of 1.35 V. This option is necessary for those who want to use this set of RAM in systems based on low-end Intel chipsets for Coffee Lake generation processors. As you know, only the Z370 Express chipset supports high-frequency RAM, for motherboards on other Intel 300 series chipsets it is limited to 2666 MHz.

    Additionally, we note that the height of the HyperX Predator RGB aluminum radiators is 42.2 mm, so the RAM will not conflict with many processor coolers.

    How it works

    HyperX Predator RGB RAM is very similar to Predator branded modules. The same recognizable black aluminum radiator is used. However, on top of each module has a kind of "comb" with RGB-backlit. “RGB” in this case means that the backlight supports up to 16.8 million colors, where you can customize each shade.

    The highlight of the HyperX Predator RGB kits , of course, is the absence of any wires that undoubtedly spoil the whole picture in any PC. Recall that some RAM modules from other manufacturers can work in RGB mode only if they are connected to the corresponding contact on the motherboard. Therefore, it is necessary to have such a fee. RGB backlight in HyperX Predator RGBwill always work, even on "colorless" motherboards. The kit supports HyperX Infrared Sync technology, thanks to which modules installed in DIMM slots are synchronized with each other using infrared sensors. If there is a barrier between the modules, the synchronization will stop. How HyperX Infrared Sync technology works is well shown in this video.

    As you can see, thanks to HyperX Infrared Sync technology, colors change smoothly and in sync. Such a picture is fascinating, of course.

    At the same time, the HyperX Predator RGB modules are compatible with the backlight technologies of the leading motherboard manufacturers: ASUS Aura Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion and MSI Mystic Light Sync. It turns out that you can purchase such a board and a set of RAM, install special software and have already set up the backlight of the Predator in it. In addition, RGB-memory elements can be synchronized directly with the backlight of the motherboard, video card, cooling system, housing, as well as LED strips connected to the board.

    So, testing was carried out with the motherboard MSI Z370 GODLIKE GAMING. We installed the Mystic Light program, which immediately displayed all the devices whose RGB elements can be configured. Then it remains to choose one of seven modes, as well as the color of the backlight. In general, setting up HyperX Predator RGB was very easy.

    Naturally, the backlight of the RAM can be turned off.


    Nevertheless, the Predator series RAM is primarily a fast and reliable solution for gaming PCs and workstations. Testing of the HyperX Predator RGB HX429C15PB3AK2 / 16 kit was performed using the Intel Core i7-8700K CPU, MSI Z370 GODLIKE GAMING motherboard and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. Naturally, the same Windows 10 assemblies, drivers and software were used.

    Measurement of processor and memory performance was carried out using the following software:

    • Corona 1.3. Testing the rendering speed using the same name renderer. The speed of building the standard BTR scene used to measure performance is measured.
    • WinRAR 5.40. Built-in benchmark popular archiver.
    • Blender 2.79. Determining the speed of the final rendering in one of the popular free packages for creating three-dimensional graphics. The duration of building the final model from Blender Cycles Benchmark rev4 is measured.
    • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6.9. Performance testing when exporting 200 RAW format photos with a resolution of 5184 × 3456 pixels to JPEG format with a resolution of 1620 × 1080 and maximum quality.
    • Adobe After Effects CC 2017. Rendering the project in the format of 1920 × 1080 @ 60 FPS.
    • Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018. Performance testing for non-linear video editing with the imposition of various effects in the resolution of Full HD.

    Testing the system in games was made in Full HD resolution. The graphs show not only the average, but the minimum FPS. The list of applications is as follows:

    • GTA V. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. Maximum graphics quality, advanced graphics quality settings are off, image resolution is off, 16x AF, no anti-aliasing.
    • The Witcher III. DirectX 11. Novigrad. High quality graphics mode, NVIDIA HairWorks off, HBAO +, AA.
    • Far Cry 5. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. High Mode, TAA.
    • Assassin's Creed: Origins. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. Mode "Very high", without smoothing.

    Testing of the HyperX Predator RGB HX429C15PB3AK2 / 16 kit was conducted in three modes. First, we used the JEDEC settings (DDR4-2400, 17-17-17-39). Then the main XMP profile was activated (DDR4-2933, 15-17-17-39). In addition, the whale of RAM completely quietly overclocked to the effective frequency of 3333 MHz. To achieve such a good result, it was not necessary either to increase the delays or to raise the voltage of the DRAM Voltage.

    First, consider the results obtained in non-game applications.

    Are you still not using high-frequency memory? And in vain! See how much faster the test bench earned while creating content. For example, processing photos in Lightroom during the transition from DDR4-2400 to DDR4-2933 accelerated by 22%! In other applications, there is also a tangible increase in speed associated with the use of faster “RAM”.

    Of course, in games, there is also an increase in performance when using high-frequency RAM. At the same time, a GeForce GTX 1080 video card was used in the stand. If we installed a PC, for example, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, the difference would be even more significant.
