Euro-Office: European Office Stack with Full Microsoft Compatibility

A coalition of European IT companies including IONOS, Nextcloud, and others has launched Euro-Office — an office suite for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The technical preview version is already available on GitHub for testing. A stable release is expected in the summer of 2026. The project aims to minimize dependence on non-European vendors while ensuring compatibility with Microsoft formats under open governance.

Coalition members — IONOS, Nextcloud, Eurostack, XWiki, OpenProject, Soverin, Abilian, and BTactic — have joined forces to create a solution without compromises in functionality. The initiative is open to developers, government agencies, and organizations focused on open standards and digital rights.

Reasons for Launch and Market Gaps

Geopolitical shifts are forcing European organizations to rethink their software stacks. Office applications are critical infrastructure, where existing alternatives suffer from:

  • Insufficient compatibility with DOCX, XLSX, PPTX.
  • Legal risks due to licenses and trademarks.
  • Lack of transparent governance and an independent community.
  • Dependence on proprietary platforms without European control.

Euro-Office addresses these issues: code under an open license, free from trademark restrictions, and an interface close to Microsoft Office for simplified migration. Achim Weiss, CEO of IONOS, emphasized the need for a sovereign stack with familiar UX and full support for legacy formats.

Frank Karlitschek from Nextcloud noted that components for such a suite have existed for years — what was missing was coordination. Now developers are taking responsibility for a key element of digital infrastructure.

Technical Foundation and Testing

The suite integrates proven open-source components into a unified stack. Key features:

  • Full compatibility with Microsoft formats (OOXML).
  • Interface that minimizes the learning curve for Office users.
  • Open source code on GitHub for community contributions.
  • Governance model involving commercial and non-commercial organizations.
  • Focus on data privacy and compliance with European regulations.

The technical version allows testing core functionality: document editing, spreadsheet calculations, and slide creation. Developers invite feedback on compatibility, performance, and edge cases ahead of release.

For mid/senior-level developers, contributing improvements upstream is especially relevant. The project uses standard protocols (WebDAV, CalDAV), simplifying integration with existing systems like Nextcloud or ownCloud.

What Matters

  • Compatibility without compromises: Support for all key Microsoft formats for seamless migration.
  • Open governance: Code on GitHub, free from licensing risks, with contributions from 10+ organizations.
  • Digital sovereignty: European control over infrastructure without external dependencies.
  • Open testing: Preview version for validation in production scenarios.
  • Scalability: Call to the community to expand the stack.

Development Prospects

After the stable release, the coalition plans expansions: integration with mobile clients, AI features for documents, and enterprise functions like auditing and e-sign. For IT departments, this is a chance to standardize the stack on open standards, reducing vendor lock-in.

Organizations with sensitive data will appreciate the lack of telemetry and full localization. Developers can fork the repository, submit patches, or integrate into custom solutions.
