# Netrunner 26: Debian 13 Trixie with Linux Kernel 6.16 and XLibre Xserver

The Nitrux team has released Netrunner 26 (Twilight) — a distro based on Debian 13 "Trixie" with Linux kernel 6.16.12. This is the first major update in a year since Netrunner 25. The build focuses on KDE Plasma and delivers improved hardware support thanks to the fresh kernel, replacing Debian's LTS version 6.12.

Key System Components

Netrunner 26 uses KDE Plasma 6.3.6 as the primary desktop environment. Additions include:

  • KDE Gear 25.04.3;
  • KDE Frameworks 6.13;
  • Qt 6.8.2 as the base framework.

The audio subsystem has switched to PipeWire with the WirePlumber session manager. For power management, power-profiles-daemon enables dynamic switching of performance profiles. Package updates are unified through Netrunner packages, simplifying system maintenance.

A standout feature is XLibre Xserver — a fork of Xorg Server emphasizing backward compatibility with X11. It's an alternative to Wayland for use cases needing stability for legacy apps without sacrificing security.

Preinstalled Software

The distro ships with up-to-date versions of key apps. Highlights include:

  • Mozilla Firefox 140.7.0 ESR — long-term support browser;
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 140.6.0 ESR — email client;
  • LibreOffice 25.2.3 — office suite;
  • VLC 3.0.23 — universal media player;
  • VirtualBox 7.2.6 — virtualization hypervisor;
  • Inkscape 1.4 — SVG vector editor;
  • GIMP 3.0.4 — raster graphics editor.

Stacher7 is also integrated — a GUI for yt-dlp that simplifies downloading audio and video files.

Technical Advantages for Developers

Linux kernel 6.16.12 offers expanded support for new hardware, including GPUs and peripherals — critical for mid/senior developers in CI/CD pipelines and virtualization. XLibre Xserver preserves the X11 API, minimizing regressions in legacy X11 code.

PipeWire + WirePlumber resolves audio compatibility issues in multimedia apps by natively supporting ALSA, JACK, and PulseAudio. Power-profiles-daemon integrates with systemd, letting scripts control the CPU governor (performance, powersave, balanced).

Netrunner's unified repositories speed up update deployments without deb package conflicts. Qt 6.8.2 with KDE Frameworks ensures stability for Qt apps in Plasma.
