Synology encourages users to upgrade DSM to protect against SynoLocker virus threatening older versions

    Taipei, Taiwan - August 8, 2014 - Synology investigates all the recent circumstances of the SynoLocker ransomware program and works with affected users. It was found that this program affects NAS servers with older versions of DSM OS, using the vulnerability fixed in December 2013 with the release of the new version. After that, Synology through various channels informed users about the need to update the system.

    Affected users may encounter the following symptoms:

    When you try to enter DSM, a window appears informing the user that his data has been encrypted and that you need to pay for its recovery;
    Extremely high processor load or an ongoing process called “synosync” (see: Main menu> Resource Monitoring);
    On a device with OS installed:
    - DSM 4.3-3810 or earlier;
    - DSM 4.2-3236 or earlier;
    - DSM 4.1-2851 or earlier;
    - DSM 4.0-2257 or earlier;

    when you enter the Control Panel> DSM Update, the system does not display the availability of available updates.
    Users who discover these symptoms should immediately shut down the system to avoid damaging more files, and contact our technical support team at:

    https://myds.synology.com/support/support_form.php

    Unfortunately, Synology cannot decrypt files that have already been affected.

    For users who do not find these symptoms, Synology strongly recommends downloading and installing the current version of DSM 5.0 or any of the following:

    DSM 4.3-3827 or later;
    DSM 4.2-3243 or later;
    DSM 4.0-2259 or later;
    DSM 3.x and earlier are not affected.
    Users can manually download the latest version from our Download Center and install it through Control Panel> DSM Update> Manual DSM Update

    Synology sincerely apologizes for any problems or inconveniences caused by its users in these circumstances. As cybercrime grows and spreads and more and more sophisticated malicious programs appear, Synology continues to devote resources to reduce the risks of threats and tries to provide reliable solutions to users. If, after installing the latest version of DSM, you notice any abnormalities in the operation of the device, contact security@synology.com
