New Garmin: for dogs, extreme sports and motorists

Garmin introduced a number of new products that will become the basis of its lineup in 2014. It is worth noting that among them there are no classical navigators: firstly, the time of these devices is gradually running out (hello to smartphones and tablets with GPS), and secondly, it is apparently considered inappropriate to focus on them during the Russian presentation at Garmin. (We previously wrote about the reasons in the Smartgadget blog).

The first line includes devices for dog training. The first is BarkLimiter: it is fixed on the collar and allows you to wean the dog from untimely barking. The latter is calculated immediately by the sound, and by the movements of the larynx.

I asked a friend of a big four-legged lover, yes, such “dog gadgets” are in certain demand in this environment. True, they do not act on some dogs, but the overwhelming majority of them bark to no avail. And after a month, the need for a device disappears. It costs about 4 thousand rubles.

Well, I’ll add on my own that I would like to see such “bark stoppers” not only for large dogs, but also for small ones. They usually spoil the "sound background" much more ... True, it is unlikely that the grandmothers - the typical owners of such sonorous dogs - will bother with high-tech collars. They are happy with everything.

We are going further. Garmin Delta models simplify dog training by "allowing the owner to remotely act on the animal and reinforcing reflexes and reactions to commands." There are two models here, Garmin Delta and Garmin Delta Sport (the latter also includes, among other things, BarkLimiter). The devices work as follows: a collar with a special module is hung on the dog’s neck, and the owner has a remote control with an LCD screen in his hands. From it you can choose the type of impact on the animal depending on the situation, the type of training or the behavior of the dog: it can be sound, vibration or a current discharge of various intensity and duration.

Again - a useful thing, but not cheap: 10-12 thousand. However, this reproach is not in the direction of Garmin, but simply the idea that keeping and training a large dog is a rather expensive process. However, he brings decent pleasure.

The Garmin DC50 is, again, a collar, but it’s not equipped with a simple remote control, but with the Garmin Astro 320 tourist navigator. In total, they are a control system for hunting dogs. Up to 10 collars can be connected to one navigator; Thus, you can find out your location and understand where the doggies run (within a radius of 14 and a half kilometers). The price of the set is almost 37 thousand rubles.

The dog theme smoothly comes to an end, and DVRs begin. While he is alone, namely Garmin GDR 35. I already mentioned in my previous posts, I repeat here: if the high prices for accessories for dogs are quite understandable, since they are unique in a sense, then offer the twin registrars Mio for 11 thousand rubles - this, of course, is very presumptuous. Even if it has GPS, the ability to alert about radar and support for a second camera. Analogs from Russian brands cost thousands of 5.

Garmin Virb is more likely not a registrar, but an extreme camera with recording in Full HD 1080p. There will be two versions - with GPS and Wi-Fi support, as well as without these modules. The positive point is the support of the ANT + protocol, which allows you to organize control from Edge cycling computers, Fenix watches, Oregon handheld navigators, and so on. For serious extreme people, all this, I think, will come in handy. But the minus is the following: Garmin Virb is suitable for short dives, but you can’t dive seriously with the camera. For swimming at a depth of 50 meters, boxing is required, which is not included. The price of the camera is from 14 thousand rubles, the option with a bike mount costs 15.5.

Garmin HUD for 8 thousand rubles is a projection display. It displays information about the direction of the next maneuver, the recommended lane for movement, the distance to the next maneuver, arrival time, current speed, current speed limit, etc. All this is calculated on an iOS device (Android and Windows applications will be released later) .

The projection of the image can be carried out both on the windshield of the car (it is necessary to stick a special film), and on the transparent shield-reflector, which is installed on the projector. In general, if you saw something similar in any BMW and were impressed, but you still have Ford Focus, then you can buy a HUD.

Well and the last - Garmin Monterra navigator on Android. Outwardly and in terms of capabilities, it resembles a smartphone: 4-inch screen, 8-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC ... From the unusual - support for ANT +, from the unusual for smartphones - a bunch of pre-installed Garmin near-navigation software and partners. Yes, there is not enough opportunity to make calls, but, apparently, Garmin turned its attention away from smartphones during the time of cooperation with ASUS. The price is not yet known.

What do you think of new products? In my opinion, Garmin got a good update of the line, although, of course, they would better not go into the registrar segment. Moreover, there are enough other niches, moreover, interesting ones.
