What computer code does in Hollywood movies

The British programmer and writer John Graham-Cumming (John Graham-Cumming) has opened an informative blog Movie Code , devoted to the use of computer code in Hollywood films. The site collects frames from films and explains where the code comes from and what exactly it does in reality. It's no secret that directors often select the code in a completely arbitrary way, sometimes it turns out very funny.

For example, a shot from the White House Storm action movie is shown at the top, where the directors used the code of several open source programs that were written in 2007-2008 to demonstrate Raw Sockets for the purpose of injecting packets. An information security specialist from the SecurityTube.net website identified his code in the official trailer.

By the way, the author expressed surprise that the hero in the trailer expresses an extreme degree of joy (hands are raised up), although to launch the program it would have to be compiled first.

The next famous masterpiece is the film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” where the protagonist, a hacker girl, prints queries to the police department database, with which she uncovered the murders of 40 years ago. Having glued several frames, we can partially consider the SQL query.

You can see mysql in the terminal header. Here is the answer coming from the police server.

Database Engineers Laughed Togetherover this answer: “Shocked moviegoers will be puzzled that one of the best hackers in the world does not know anything about the LIKE template validation operator, and why the hell none of the victims have RL initials,” they are perplexed.

These two examples were already mentioned on Habré, and now freshman. In a pilot episode of the Charlie Angels series (2011), an underground safe terminal was found under a kitten toilet litter box. Now fans have finally recognized this code. Do not believe it, but this is a challenge from the 2005 Obfuscated C code contest, namely, a minimized Sudoku problem solver!

The source code can be found here .

In one episode of the Elementary series about Sherlock Holmes, a note with a program code in an unknown language fell into the frame.

howit turned out to be the esoteric programming language Malbolge, designed to be as difficult as possible to write programs. The author named the programming language from Malebolge, the eighth circle of hell Dante, and suggested that it would cause a headache for both the author of the program and everyone who reads it. The code on the note is taken from Wikipedia and simply displays the text “Hello World!” On the screen.

But in the movie "Iron Man" the screen got into the frame with the loading of the Iron Man costume .

Interestingly, this is valid C code, and it is taken from the bootloader for RCX firmware (Lego programmable brick with a microcontroller). Program written in 1998 at Stanford, source code. How did the filmmakers guess to take this particular code? Could they accidentally stumble upon him?

To date, more than 30 examples of the curious use of computer programs in Hollywood films have already been sent to the Movie Code website. They will be published daily, enough material for a month in advance.
