Review of the new Kindle Paperwhite (2013)
Hello!
I owe the opportunity to talk about the new Kindle Paperwhite to my almost seven-year-old son, who on the second day after he was presented with a Pocketbook 360 (the very first, from the pre-orders who remembers), crushed his screen, accidentally sitting on it in the car. After asking for repair options (3960 rubles per screen with delivery from Moscow to America, or $ 40 in Germany + $ 55 delivery), I realized that there seems to be only one option - Kindle.
Having read many times that someone crushed their Kindle for the third time and received a new replacement from Amazon, I decided to find out the current situation first hand. After talking with Amazon support (to be sure, I interrogated two different Indians), I found out that today, for the new Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon is replacing devices in case of any problems except physical breakdowns. And in order to be able to replace the reader with a broken screen, you need to purchase an extended warranty for 2 years for $ 30. It includes 3 free replacements during these two years.
In general, now knowing in my own skin how fragile screens are in readers, and how children can be neat (or not neat), I decided to take this extended warranty, and at the same time a branded cover. By the way, who will order a Persimmon color cover (persimmon) - do not believe the pictures on the site. In life, it is not orange, but almost red.

There will be no deployment photos (I did not think from the very beginning) - but everything is the same as with the first Kindle - a sealed box with a beveled edge, a tear strip, inside the device in a film bag and a USB cable, there is no power supply itself (this is written in information, so this is not a surprise).
I can’t compare the previous Paperwhite and the new one live, but outwardly everything is almost the same, more about the past model can be read here
The main technical specifications in detail everything on the official website
The build quality is excellent, it doesn’t play anything or creak, and there’s nothing to creak.
As for the backlight, I was pleased with a fairly large adjustment range. But as in last year’s device, at the bottom of the screen, near the LEDs, there are small dips in brightness, but, in my opinion, are still not so obvious.

Having run through the English-language reviews, people report that, compared to the first Paperwhite, Amazon's 25% increase in the speed of turning is felt just like that. I personally can only compare it with the PocketBook 360 (and that is in the memories), and I must say that the Kindle scrolls much faster, there is practically no delay, neither in plain text nor in PDF.
When reading plain text, a full screen update occurs dynamically, depending on the speed of reading, the number of pages read and the temperature of the device ( Gizmodo ). At the time of writing, I had a screen update every 13th page.

PDF, by the way, in my opinion, can only be read in landscape orientation. But something can be tried in portraiture. When reading PDF, text contrast adjustment becomes available.

The adjustment scale is turned on in this way, although the adjustment itself is normal.
What else to add on the use of the book ...
1. Books can be combined into “collections” - well, folders, in general
2. You can quite comfortably surf the Internet (the video does not show if that :)), but there is no Russian keyboard. If anyone knows how to do it, write in the comments?
3. There is a “parental control” - you can password protect the use of a browser, cloud storage and Amazon bookstore. Until the end of the year, they promise to release a firmware update, in which there will be some more interesting chips for children: it will be possible to create different profiles for different children, set goals and track reading progress (achievements!). It also seemed to me that I saw in TV advertising that it would be possible to limit the time I use the device for each profile, but I’m definitely not sure, but I haven’t come across this advertisement yet.

As for the exact release date for the firmware, he was already interrogating the third Indian from the support service. More precisely than the end of the year, he could not say
4. I also liked the ability to automatically build a dictionary for those words whose translation was looked at. Then from this dictionary you can go to cards for learning these words. On the card is written the word, a fragment of the text where it met, and the name of the book. You can mark the word as learned, or see Definition
5. In the lower left corner, you can touch to switch the display of the page, the remaining time to the end of the chapter, the remaining time to the end of the book. In the lower right corner progress is displayed as a percentage
6. Touch-screen and paging: the screen is divided into 3 zones, something like this: on the left, a vertical strip of 10%, on top of the horizontal strip of 10%, the remaining space is the 3rd zone. Touching in the left zone - scrolling backward, touching in the right "large" zone - scrolling forward. Touching in the upper zone - calls up the menu. You can also swipe left and right to scroll back and forth, respectively. Swiping from the bottom of the screen up causes the book to be viewed: you can quickly view (in a slightly smaller page size) at least the entire book in any direction without leaving the current page. You can increase or decrease the font size with two fingers.
Thanks for attention!

Addition Updated the
firmware, the promised Freetime and achievements appeared.
Found that I can not add some books to the freetime library. by chance it turned out that they were in Russian.
I decided that it was a bug, that I didn’t see Russian names.
Signed up with support, here is a fragment:
Varsha: Alexey, can you please help me with the order number of the book?
Me: Oh, there is no order number for this book, it is an old book I already had
Varsha: Yeah. How did you get that book?
Me: I think I sent it to my Kindle through email
Varsha: Is it a personal book?
In that case you cannot add it to the Free Time Alexey :(
Me: Errr, I didn't know that freetime is only for books purchased from amazon?
Varsha: Yes Alexey. It is like this. But let me re-check it once again.
Public library books, personal documents, music, audiobooks, books from Pottermore, Amazon Instant Video rentals, and titles from the Prime Instant Video or Kindle Owners' Lending Library catalog can't be added to a profile.
Me: Oh ... ok, thanks for explanation, I didn't have a chance yet to read all the details about freetime.
Varsha: :) No problem Alexey.
Is there anything else that I can help you with?
In short: in freetime you can add only books purchased (at least for free) from amazon, no more.
