eDavid: a robot artist

In order to learn how to paint, you need to learn for many years. Of course, there are brilliant self-taught, but they also have to spend a fair amount of time to achieve the level of a professional. But if you are a robot, whose name is e-David, training is not necessary, only high-quality software and acrylic paints are required. Well, and the brush, of course.

The robot was created by a development team from the University of Constance (Germany). The robot, according to its creators, is able to create a copy of almost any "seen" picture. In order for the robot to work normally, it was provided with paints, the ability to work with a 24-color palette, as well as a brush.

The process of creating another picture begins with the fact that eDavid photographs the original picture. After that, he analyzes the resulting photo, trying to "understand" where and how to apply strokes to get a copy of the picture. His style is similar to "pointe", but instead of dots, the robot applies thin, almost weightless brush strokes.

Every few minutes, the robot photographs its work, comparing it with the original. If necessary, he makes adjustments, and continues to work.

As mentioned above, there are several limitations. Firstly, the robot can only work with acrylic paints, as they dry quickly. Of course, he will not be able to reproduce watercolor drawings as he would like. In addition, the robot has three degrees of freedom of its “hand”, so smearing is also carried out according to a limited, so to speak, algorithm.

Nevertheless, what turns out looks quite interesting to itself, it’s not a daub, but real pictures. Maybe soon some of the work of the robot will be exhibited in the gallery.
