Editing Gadget: An Overview of One Collection

Sometimes I find myself thinking - why do not I have a car? And then I look around the room, and the answer suggests itself. If you sell (or just don’t buy) everything that the shelves and table are littered with, you could get a very good car. In short, below is a kind of brief experience operating two dozen gadgets. I really hope that this text will help you in choosing new devices and will warn against errors.

Notebook ASUS N76
(17.3``, Full HD, Blu-ray, Core i7-3630QM, nVidia GeForce GT 635M, 8 GB, two 2 TB HDDs in total)

In general, I wholeheartedly love Samsung laptops, although I believe that the company does not pay too much attention to the development of this area. If you want a very high-quality, reliable, but to the point of dull, boring laptop computer - then yes, Samsung. Personally, three HP laptops and one Sony VAIO died on my hands, and only three Samsung models managed to withstand about a year and a half of very intensive use.

However, at the very end of 2012, when I once again decided to update the laptop, I stopped at the ASUS N76. The background of this purchase looks ridiculous: I went with a friend to pick her a new mobile phone, and in the cabin she seemed to point between the case at N76 - they say, look how beautiful. I looked - and ... Well, I didn’t fall in love, but I remembered the name of the model. I read it, thought it over and decided to take it. Indeed, ASUS N76, in my opinion, today is one of the most successful options in the "desktop replacement" class.

ASUS N76 in person

I do not have the most-most advanced modification, but “one of”: with a Blu-ray drive and a Full HD screen with a matte finish. Other amenities include a package: it includes a nice cloth bag, a wired mouse, and even a small subwoofer, attributed to the Danes from Bang & Olufsen.

The same subwoofer

However, they will tell you about the advantages and advantages in advertising booklets, where it is more interesting to talk about the disadvantages. In particular, the ASUS N76 has a battery dangling - you carry the laptop in your hands, and you feel that the battery is “walking” in its seat. I recall that in the case of Sony VAIO VGN-FZ21SR a similar design miscalculation led to the loss of contact between the battery and the laptop, and the latter turned off. The ASUS N76 does not have such a problem, and yet it is a bit unpleasant ... After all, this is far from the cheapest laptop of a Taiwanese company.

The second complaint concerns the keyboard. No, with ergonomics, everything is just fine with her - perhaps this is generally the most convenient “keyboard” of those that I have seen. Thank you for the highlight too. But now the cover of the horizontal “picture” on the “J / O” key has been erased after a month of operation, and now the same backlight “beats” from there. Also an unpleasant trifle.

The above-described keyboard defect

Another strange moment is that it comes from scratches on the corners of the case. The space around the keyboard of the ASUS N76 is metal (the bottom is made of plastic), and so noticeable potholes appeared at the corners. The laptop was never taken out of the apartment, it was not beaten or dropped. When buying, there were definitely no scratches. Mystic.

Scratches on the corner of the case

The rest is a great solution. Especially for those who lack MacBook in a similar configuration. And yes, I replaced the complete mouse with the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000:

Netbook Nokia BookLet 3G

As you know, the first and last Nokia netbook was not shipped to Russia and Ukraine. Specifically, my copy is designed for the American operator AT & T. I don’t know how it should be, or local sellers did their best, but the 3G modem in the netbook is “unlocked” and works perfectly with domestic SIM cards.

Actually, Nokia BookLet 3G has exactly two advantages. The first is a netbook from Nokia. I'm not sure that everyone will consider this fact an advantage, but this origin of this computer causes an excellent WOW effect. There was even a case when a person several times ran his hand over the cover with the Nokia logo, trying to tear off a sticker that does not exist. He thought that I took some Acer and attached a piece of scotch tape with the name of the Finnish company on it.

The second advantage is the design. Something like this might look like an Apple netbook - the realm of aluminum, neat, strict lines and all that. However, Apple later released the MacBook Air 11 and showed what a small Cupertino laptop should really look like. It should be not only beautiful, but also powerful.

Meanwhile, Nokia BookLet 3G with power is very complicated: the Intel Atom Z530 processor, designed primarily for tablets (correct if I am mistaken), has an extremely weak graphics subsystem, 1 GB of RAM, which cannot be increased ... All this adds up to multi-second delays even when you try to open the Start menu in Windows 7, not to mention any MS Office file. And the saddest thing is that I’m never joking.

SIM slot

The screen resolution (by the way, cloudy and low-quality), which is 1280 x 720 pixels versus the standard for netbooks 1366 x 768 or 1024 x 600, complements the picture. As a result, some applications on BookLet 3G work obliquely, that is, stretch them to full screen - and the bottom " piece ”no, it is located as if outside the display.

In general, I keep this 10-inch rarity only because I want to sell it in 10 years for a million dollars no one will give a lot for it today. Well, sometimes I still go on business trips with him - even if the battery does not last 10 hours today, as it was before, but it still provides 6-6.5 hours. Well, thanks for that.

Kin One by Microsoft Phone

But for what in 10 years they will really give, if not a million, but several thousand for sure, this is for the Microsoft Kin One phone. In the USA, it failed miserably, to Europe and even more so to Russia did not reach at all, but I still managed to grab a copy. In terms of software, this is a kind of rudimentary version of Windows Phone without the ability to install applications, in terms of hardware, it’s a kind of turtle, which is unreal to use.

Kin One is designed for CDMA EV-DO networks, so I heartily connected it in half to the Ukrainian Intertelecom. True, after a couple of weeks the Internet was cut off, and since then Kin One can only receive and make calls. (I wrote more about this here: habrahabr.ru/post/104391 .)

Smartphone Samsung Galaxy S4

In recent years, he tried to use only Motorola smartphones, but in the end they got me. The last straw was the fact that Motorola decided not to upgrade the Asian RAZR XT910 to Android 4.1. That is, we will update the European, the American and Australian - too, but the “Asians” will be killed. In principle, I would get angry, angry at the “guys from Illinois”, and would stay on the RAZR XT910 with Android 4.0.4, but then my screen cracked.

Cracked strangely: I dropped it from the couch onto the carpet (well, half a meter maximum), and everything seemed to be fine. Went to sleep. I wake up in the morning, looking - and there is a crack across the entire screen. Apparently, when the case fell, it slightly warped, the glass “strained” and could not stand it at night. So I thought - to order some RAZR HD from behind the hill, wait for a couple of weeks, and then again get a bummer with fresh software and, if something happens, repair? (It’s no secret that it’s not easy to repair Motorola now - there are no spare parts, and craftsmen can always “pick it up” correctly due to lack of experience.) As a result, I went and bought a Samsung Galaxy S4. I repeatedly scolded this smartphone for its "plastic" design, so I immediately ennobled it with a yellow Flip Cover panel. I like the color yellow significantly more than others,

Collection of Samsung Galaxy S4 covers: complete, blue Flip Cover, yellow Flip Cover

As a gift, I was presented with an additional battery with a charging case and another Flip Cover - blue. Already for his money bought a 64-gigabyte memory card SanDisk Mobile Ultra.

Additional battery in the case

In general - a good apparatets, but so far damp. For example, SGS4 can suddenly start to heat up, although it seems like it does not solve any resource-intensive tasks at this moment. And sometimes, on the contrary, he’s quite cool, but when he tries to take a photo with a flash, he displays messages like: “Now you can’t use a flash, I'm hot.” The camera application, again, crashed regularly, but in one of the latest firmware this moment was fixed. But now the camera sometimes starts for 7-8 seconds. And sometimes - 1-2. In general, finish this SGS4 and finish. This is a minus. Well, the plus is that sooner or later he’ll finish it. Unlike Motorola, Samsung does not give up its flagship products.

Smartphone HTC Titan

There are in the collection and such. It is difficult to say why it is necessary in mid-2013, but it is a pity to sell. I don’t know if Windows Phone 7.8 will ever be upgraded to 7.9, but right now the indicated version of the OS looks abandoned. If some more or less interesting software for WP appears, then only for the G8. But the same Instagram for Windows Phone 7.8 is unlikely to be done, but for Windows Phone 8 it may well be.

But in terms of hardware, HTC Titan is very cool. The case is metal, the screen is awesome. Despite the fact that here the resolution is only 480 x 800 with a diagonal of 4.7 inches - in terms of viewing angles and color rendition, this display will give odds to most “IPS type” screens that are installed in smartphones of second-tier brands.

Kin One and HTC Titan

But the quality of voice transmission is poor. In particular, the interlocutors complain of some kind of wild rustling. Perhaps the reason for the location of the antennas is that they are located on the rear panel, and if “it is wrong to hold the smartphone (s) Steve Jobs”, then some interference may appear ...

In general, Windows Phone looks fresh. Just look at SGS4 with its Tachvis, and then at Nexus 7 (about it below) with its bare Android - and it becomes somehow dreary, regardless of the difference in the appearance of the OS. And then you take a look at the Windows Phone tiles - and you immediately feel more fun. Until you start using, yeah.

Smartphone Sharp SH530U

Like the Japanese smartphone from the Japanese company Sharp, which supplies the screens of HTC, Apple and other monsters, but for some reason equipped its own smartphone with a terrible display. It is really scary: 5 inches, 480 x 800, the image is faded, while scrolling through the lists on the screen for a couple of seconds there are loops (!).

Kin One and Sharp SH530U It's cool

that there is 20 GB of memory. If the smartphone is disassembled and pulled out a MicroSD card, to which the user does not have “official” access, the Sharp SH530U will have 4 GB of memory. And if you put instead of the extracted card her "sister" to 32 GB, then we get a 36-gigabyte drive. Which I did.

Change the memory card

And the main thing here is this: never (hear: NEVER!) Do not try to insert a "SIM" microSIM format into the SH530U without an adapter. It rolls with many smartphones, but not here. The card is stuck tightly in the slot, and when you try to get it, the metal contacts break. As a result, now my SH530U is no longer a two-, but a one-character smartphone, and the slot that supports 3G has “flown”. Sadness.

Smartphone Highscreen Boost

When I still hadn’t planned to buy the Samsung Galaxy S4, but I was planning a vacation very much (as a result, the second did not take place due to the purchase), I also got Highscreen Boost.

There was no point in taking the RAZR XT910 with me on an excursion - I had it discharged in a day, and if I took a picture all the time, then in about ten hours. The last time, a Smart from Smart Motorola sat down about half an hour before entering Cairo, so for the future I would like to get something more autonomous. Here Highscreen Boost - this is it: with a battery of 4 160 mAh, he lives with me for five days. If there is very little to call, then it will reach a week. There is, of course, the RAZR MAXX XT910, but there is a battery with a capacity of 3,300 mAh, that is, noticeably weaker. Another advantage of Boost is its completely decent 8-megapixel camera, and even with a separate key, which is not found in either RAZR or SGS4.

In general, the device is not bad, although not without drawbacks. For example, it is thick (14 with a hook mm) and heavy (185 g). After a thin and light RAZR, getting used to such dimensions was not easy. But used to.

Smartphone BlackBerry Curve 9220

I spoke about BlackBerry Curve 9220 in detail in this post (http://habrahabr.ru/company/smartgadget/blog/186068/), but now I’ll just add that there was no place for it in my personal ecosystem. Well, yes, the dialer. Yes, small and compact. It looks, again, fresh. But for the role of dialers, I have several other devices ...

Nokia 105 and Samsung Keystone 2 Phones

Such a handset with a week-long autonomy (against a couple of days in the case of the BlackBerry Curve 9220) and a minimum of functions, as it seems to me, should be bundled with any modern smartphone (except perhaps Highscreen Boost).

Android smartphones - they work strangely: the same Samsung Galaxy S4 seems to be showing 40% of the battery, and after a couple of hours, although I didn’t play, I didn’t watch the video and didn’t surf the Internet, it already offers to connect a charger. I have an additional battery (see above), but in general it is not included in the delivery package of SGS4 - I was handed it to me in the store as a bonus. And other owners of SGS4 do not.

Nokia 105 and Samsung Keystone 2

Now Nokia 105 and Samsung Keystone 2 are not really needed for me. But to describe the life situation on the market, these devices fit very well. Yes, in “Korean” there is no FM radio and a normal flashlight (there is only the “Flashlight” application that displays a white picture), that is, it seems to be mandatory options for budget handsets. But in all other respects this product is noticeably cooler than “Finn”: it concerns the quality of the screen (it’s literally a cut above), and the case materials (Samsung doesn’t at least scratch and does not get dirty), and the quality of voice transmission, and guarantees (Samsung has it usual, but Nokia has a peculiar one, see the article in Vedomosti: tinyurl.com/oublbng ). In this case, both phones cost 800 rubles. So draw conclusions - who is heading to where, and who is heading for success ...

Other phones

I don’t want to describe the old stuff in detail, so I’ll just say that in our “City N” there is a small secret store. On the shelves there is an almost complete line of new (!) Siemens phones, several no less new Nokia smartphones, including 6600 and 7610, a number of Motorola models from the time of the C350 and so on. All phones have never been in use - they are in films and in full. (They just don’t turn on, since the kaput came to the batteries in the last five-year period.) For a long time tormented sellers - they say, where did all this come from? “Echo of war,” they replied. An intelligible answer failed. Apparently, these are some kind of inventories or telephones from the stores of service centers (they have “spare parts” devices) that they have not been able to sell for many, many years. So I bought there Siemens SX1, Sony Ericsson W880i and a couple more devices. If anyone is interested - write letters, I will give the address :)

Motorola E770v, Siemens SX1, Sony Ericsson W880, Motorola RAZR V3

The New iPad Tablet

The simplest version is no cellular, 16 GB of memory, black. I remember that I was very surprised by the display, but today, in the days of smartphones with Full HD-screens, it is not so amazing. But still good. You can’t say much about the iPad - reliable, fast and all that. But perhaps it’s too big: it was after “talking” with The New iPad that I realized that tablets in the “9.7-10.1 inch” form factor are too big and heavy for me.

Nexus 7 Tablet

This tablet was bought for the sole purpose of quickly getting the latest versions of Android and learning the changes. Therefore, it was decided not to spend money on the option with 16 GB of memory (the 32-gigabyte version did not exist then) and buy a modification of 8 GB. As a result, I will not recommend it to anyone - only about 6 “hectares” are available, which is extremely small for normal life. Now the secondary market of the Nexus is very large, so there is a temptation to buy an option with 8 GB for the “peeping peel”. So: do not spare money - the more memory, the better. It is impossible to expand it.

In general, the Nexus 7 is a great tablet. And cheap. I don’t want to look at all sorts of semi-finished products with dull “Rockchips”, “Boxchips”, without GPS-modules, but with a cover in the kit (that's YES!).

But this time it will not do without nit-picking. The first and main is the strange behavior of the screen. In the upper left corner, dozens of luminous points are sometimes visible on a black background. They look like broken pixels, but when you tap with your finger, their number and location change. After a reboot, they may disappear for a while, or they may remain in place.

The second point is the silver edging of the case, which tries to seem like metal, but in fact it is plastic, and soft. In my case, a noticeable dent appeared on it, although I use the tablet very carefully.

The same dent.

In general, I use Nexus 7 primarily for playing Angry Birds. Well, of course, I'm following Android updates: the other day, the next version of the operating system just arrived - 4.3.

Reader Highscreen Alex

One of my favorite devices. “Technology for technology” is just some kind of decadence. Here, I recall, two screens: the top 6-inch E Ink, the bottom is a 3.5-inch capacitive TFT-matrix. And here is the Android 1.6 operating system, Wi-Fi adapter and other makings of a tablet computer. You can use Alex as a reader without any problems, it is difficult to use it as an Android device in the usual sense of the word - the OS version is very old, the screen has a horizontal orientation, there is no Google Play directory.

PocketBook Basic Reader

Alex is good for everyone as a reader, but only a bit long. Therefore, it does not fit in a small bag, and the battery began to hold less for a couple of years of operation ... That's why I took PocketBook Basic for myself. I am aware that Sony makes good readers, and Amazon generally tears everyone and everything, but I still prefer "omnivorous." In general, Basic is a very worthy model, it does not have serious flaws, it is relatively inexpensive. From the unpleasant, I will highlight a slightly creaking case and the lack of a music player - sometimes I do not mind reading to music.

Canon EOS 1000D Camera

I was bought in a drunken stupor under the vigorous cries of the second half - they say, well, let's try to become professional photographers! I perfectly understood that I won’t become a professional photographer, and to become one with the Canon EOS 1000D, and even with a whale lens, is simply unrealistic, so ... In short, I got off with a little blood - I took the most inexpensive DSLR, tried to take something, did not like it, put it on the shelf. But half, which is the second, - so she lost interest in photographing about a day after the purchase. Women - they are.

Nikon CoolPix S800c Camera

I talked about her in this post: habrahabr.ru/company/smartgadget/blog/182214 . Gizmo in the style of Highscreen Alex: everything seems to be cool, but it's hard to use. Yes, in theory, a camera running Android is very convenient and functional, but if you want to check and go, look towards the Samsung Galaxy Camera. S800c is really bad.

Kodak EasyShare C123 Sport Camera

My favorite camera - under normal conditions, shoots lousy, but then yellow and ... underwater. And just for hunting fish and sea urchins, it fits well. Yes, there is no optical zoom, yes, the video is recorded at a resolution of 640 x 480, which is pretty darn little. But in 2011 it cost about $ 70. And for this money there were practically no alternatives to this Kodak. Now on the Internet EasyShare C123 Sport is still found in some places, but for some reason they ask for it up to 200 bucks. I do not recommend paying so much more advanced options mass.

Player Sony Walkman NWZ-S763

I am in no way an audiophile, so I won’t talk about expensive players from proud little-known brands and headphones for a thousand bucks. I listen to music on the Sony Walkman NWZ-S763 with 4 GB of memory - it so happened that I did not find the 8-gigabyte version on sale. There is nothing special to say about it: it plays worse than those most expensive players, but it is clearly better than products offered under local Russian brands.

Sony believed in the prospects of Bluetooth technology and even implemented it in such a way that now you can not only connect headphones by the “tooth”, but also throw files. It's good. But the bad thing is that a proprietary WM-port is used to connect to the computer. This means that if you sow a cable, you will have to pay. Paying, however, also does not always work out - such "shoelaces" are rarely found on sale.

The ill-fated WM-port

A case here, by the way, is metal. And he, as Internet observers say, "pleasantly cools his hand." Here.

Behind the scenes

There is also a number of devices on the farm that, for various reasons, I do not want to talk about in more or less detail. However, I think they deserve a short mention.

Here, for example, the Acer AspireRevo nettop on the first version of nVidia Ion. I bought it in an attempt to transfer from a laptop to a desktop with a good monitor, but a month later I realized that laptops are forever.

The computer is something like this: Acer AspireRevo nettop, LG W2600HP monitor, Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 kit

This is a Motorola digital photo frame. I doubt very much that the American company itself riveted this framework - apparently, it procured on the side and drew its logo. In general, I bought this thing for a gift, but then at home I once again appreciated the depressing quality of the screen and decided to leave it at my place - it was a shame to give this.

Digital frame Motorola LS700

Stand Microsoft Cooling Base for laptops with a diagonal up to 15 inches. He copes with his tasks, but he buzzes very unpleasantly at work. Sometimes I use it in the summer, although the 17-inch ASUS N76 staggers on it.

Motorola Finiti Bluetooth Headset. If I understand correctly, it reads vibrations from the skull, has several microphones, and is also equipped with a cunning Android application that provides SMS playback in English. In general, a good headset, but only I have not learned to carry something extra on my head.

Xbox 360. I wanted to play sports, playing sports games with Kinect support. Enough for exactly three days, after which a gym membership was purchased. So somehow more reliable.

That, in fact, is all (almost all). Hello to all those who read :)
