Why MGTS moves PON

Hello, I’m an MGTS engineer and I was very interested in a post about vulnerabilities in Wi-Fi routers used for subscribers using PON technology. Since new users cannot write comments, I write a post right away with my thoughts on this topic.

I want to say right away that I don’t do PON in my work (fortunately), but I have the opportunity to communicate with those people who are associated with it. Be sure to give them information from the post and ask them to express their thoughts. True, there are serious fears that the result will be insignificant. The Chinese client hardware is purchased by railcars, the configuration is poured in the conveyor way, and the Negroes are engaged in switching on the subscribers, that is, sorry, representatives of the contracting organizations, and for the kind of money for which no staff member will even get away.

Therefore, I want to touch on a slightly different topic. Why does MGTS need this PON with all its high cost and insecurity? Why sohysteria with this all? Yes, advanced technology, yes, good speed and competitive advantages. But, in my opinion, the root is a little different. It has a name and legal entity - CJSC MGTS Real Estate.

There is little information about this company, such small notes mentioned its creation last year . And yet, since its inception, this company has become one of the largest property owners in Moscow! A million square meters, this, you know, is not a joke. Mega with Ikea comes first in terms of volume, and they only have two. The MGTS Real Estate company owns all the PBX buildings in Moscow, and this is several hundred capital buildings. Most of them are frame reinforced concrete, six floors of five meters, of which twelve ordinary floors are easily made. It is a sin not to use such a resource at current real estate prices. Moreover, the true owner of the entire MGTS (as well as MTS, Bashneft and other newspaper newspapers) - AFK-Sistema has long dreamed of moving from 28th place in the ranking of Moscow real estate owners somewhere higher.

However, there is little trouble, most of the building is occupied by these nasty telephone exchanges with their employees. However, this problem is solved. The equipment is mostly outdated; it has long been necessary to change it. The process of transition to the "figure" began even during the USSR, with the traditional break in the 90s, but due to the huge volumes and continuous progress, it naturally lags behind. More recently, in some places on the telephone exchange you could find serviceable equipment on radio tubes! However, an additional incentive has now appeared. The volume of equipment that occupied five floors 40 years ago, already 20 years ago fit in two, and now - in one room.

The process of re-equipping the stations is in full swing. One of the first to dismantle the ATS-921, at Novy Arbat, 2 (which is not surprising). Some buildings will be converted intohotels , for example. Moreover, these hotels have long been working. On one of the automatic telephone exchanges in the Nagornaya area in the former bus station, there are dense rows of bunks for migrant workers ...

Honestly, I had no idea the scale of the tragedy. Well, I thought they would transfer all the equipment to the first floor, as they already did, and the rest - for offices, a dog with him. But now more and more often I hear from informed people that MGTS generally plans to abandon PBX buildings! Totally! Of course, formally they have not been owned by the operator for a year already, but so far the main thing remains there - crosses.

What is cross? This is a room on the ground floor where all the copper cables in the area come. Each apartment has a direct connection through a pair of copper wires with a cross. Previously, this was the main advantage of MGTS, since you do not need to build anything to enable fast Internet through ADSL, you just need to install modems from two sides, in simple terms. Now, for example, video surveillance is being done at a furious pace throughout the city and at polling stations. This, in fact, makes MGTS old copper. But copper is no longer in fashion, optics are in fashion. Therefore, the process of leaving the old scheme is in full swing. For example, have you heard that MGTS offers some very high speeds on ADSL, 10 Mb / s, 20 Mb / s? In fact, through a simple copper pair, even if the cable was laid not under Khrushchev, but under Brezhnev, so much simply will not pass. The secret is as for the RS (the distribution cabinet at home), the Internet goes through optics, DSLAM is located near the RS, and only a short section of the ADSL technology works, no further than to the next entrance and to the desired floor. With such a scheme, no automatic telephone exchange is needed anymore; it is enough to extend the optics to the Internet connection node, which may be few and much more compact.

What's bad about it? Well, blackouts, for example. Last week, electricity disappeared in the north-east of Moscow, without power left Medvedkovo, Sviblovo and Babushkinskoye. They served the food, but MGTS didn’t work at home immediately, because many DSLAMs simply hung up. Several dozen houses. Engineers then drove through the cabinets for several days to overload the cards ...

In general, I am very sorry for the former reliability of the telephone network. Once each automatic telephone exchange was a strategic object, each employee of the station had a personalized gas mask, and the entire basement of the building was occupied by an orgom battery of batteries. Even with a complete power outage in the city, communications continued to work for several hours. And after the memorable blackout of 2005near the main telephone nodes put additional diesel generators. By the way, remember what happened then? A good half of Moscow turned off, including the M9 station on Butlerova Street, where one of the main traffic exchange hubs of Russia and the server of the largest local Internet resources are located. Even in the north, where there was food, the Internet was more likely dead than alive.

Now, with new blackouts, which are simply inevitable, no one will have a telephone connection, not to mention the Internet. Yes, someone bought an uninterruptible power supply home, some nodes have backup batteries, but what remains of a working network can no longer be called a working network. Returning to our PONs, it is impossible not to notice that the “tree” topology of this promising optical network is the most unreliable of the possible options, the bundle of optical splitters makes it impossible to determine the cable break point using an optical reflectometer, not to mention other disadvantages.

So personally, I will try to stay as far away as possible from PON both as a client and as an expert (by the way, they do not offer me any discounts on my home phone and turn it off without hesitation in case of delayed payment). But the old network will still be gone. For the most stubborn customers, they will put equipment in the basement of the house that will give out a traditional analog signal, and they will take all the copper out of the sewer into scrap metal.

What do you say there, 3 million subscribers? How much do they pay, five hundred rubles a month? And some are even smaller. Just think, the net profit of MGTS OJSC for 2012 is 9 and a half billion rubles, and the assets of MGTS Real Estate CJSC at current prices are approximately 140 billion!

Guys, what's the connection? Communication is not relevant. Free the room, please.
