Congratulations on the day of the system administrator!

As Wikipedia suggests , 13 years ago, the outgoing American system administrator Ted Kekatos decided that the admins should have their own day, which you can leave the server room, go to nature / to the bar / (any other preferred offline) and how to celebrate with “brothers in arms” ".

For the first time, the day of the system administrator was celebrated on July 28, 2000, and since then every year on the last Friday of July more and more system administrators around the world began to work with combed beards and in their favorite knitted sweaters, waiting for congratulations. And at the end of the working day, a user who, out of habit, came for help and technical support, could be faced with the fact that the office was closed ...

... and only a plush talisman remained on duty.

On behalf of our entire Mail.Ru Group admin team, I want to congratulate you, dear Habravites, on our common professional holiday! However, a system administrator is not only a profession, but also a vocation ...

Interesting fact 1. In the United States, this day sounds like "Thanksgiving to the System Administrator (System Administrator Appreciation Day)." On the one hand, we would like it to be called in the same way, it should immediately bear a very correct and concrete appeal in its name: “We will thank the administrators for the fact that everything works!” But on the other hand, you can not give users reason to think that on other days you can not thank for the work done ...

Our profession, which appeared relatively recently, is still rather vaguely defined. Almost everyone understands it in her own way, starting from grandmothers (for whom we are just “computer technicians”, as, incidentally, the manager from the sales department - he also works at the computer), inviting me to fix the TV with the missing Petrosyan, ending with top managers, those who want to deal with registering their Apple ID on the iPad.

Interesting fact 2 : In the “all-Russian classifier of occupations of workers, positions of employees and tariff categories” (link), the profession “system administrator” does not exist. Instead, there is a set of such professions:
    - “Computer Network Administrator” (Code for OKZ 2131)
    - “Database Administrator” (Code for OZK 2139)
    - “Information Network Information Security Administrator” (Code for OZK 2139)
    - “Engineer - system programmer ”(Code on OKZ 2132)

For commercial structures, most of which do not use this classifier, this, of course, does not play a special role, but what about employees of state enterprises who are required to use the classifier, and at the same time can perform the functions of all the above professions? And if still sometimes it is necessary to configure IP-telephony? “An engineer of linear communication facilities and subscriber devices” (code for OZK 2144).
The system administrator in many organizations is a very broad profession.

Table work is an integral part of the administrator’s technical support work

    Mass IP-telephony

Systemic logical thinking is a very difficult cognitive skill that has evolved over the years: every day, with every update of Windows (and firewood flying in different directions), with every new Linux kernel, with every new employee who imagines himself a kulhacker and changes his IP address ...

Only a system administrator, accustomed to thinking outside the box and isolating patterns that are invisible to mere mortals from this chaos, can figure out why the server does not respond, does not respond to 1C in a remote warehouse, or what unknown virus encrypted yles with annual financial report.

Sometimes from the outside, this is akin to shamanism.

But in fact, this is the product of deductive thinking of system administrators, and the solution to the next ticket in helpdesk is similar to solving the crime by Sherlock Holmes.

Sometimes completing tasks looks like a difficult quest. For example, here is one of the tickets in our helpdesk:

System administrators are not born, this is daily cognitive work and endless pumping of skills.

So, what do you want to wish on this (and beyond) days?

    First, of course, proper nutrition:

    Yes, this is a cake!

... a good and stable “hardware”:

    Switching in our new office

    ... smaller “blue screens”:

(but actually we have nothing against blue!)

Especially when blue is a way of saying “Go to Jira!”

    ... more interesting new gadgets:

Cardboard workplace - colleagues made a surprise for leaving the vacation

Detail: cardboard laptop with cardboard Win 8

... and even a cardboard phone!

... and professional recognition in all your forms!

    Happy holiday!

PS: to relieve emotional stress, we recommend that you get a cute kitten in the sysadmin. However, another furry beast will also fit:
