Genome mutations responsible for educational level found

Last week at Science : An international team of researchers reported finding genetic variations associated with the amount of education received by people with European roots.

Scientists conducted a genome-wide association study and found mutations in specific parts of the genome, the appearance of which correlates with educational achievements. The found mutations account for only two percent of the variations in the level of education and cognitive abilities, but include single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are “promising” for further research. In particular, three independent mutations (rs9320913, rs11584700, rs4851266) are responsible for approximately 1 additional month of training each.

The studies were conducted on data on residents of Utah with North and West European roots (HapMap 2 CEU).
