It has a hyperbolic orbit, which is mainly why it is initially classified as a comet. And the orbit clearly indicates that this object flew from outside the solar system. Arrived from the "north", the inclination of the orbit is about 120 degrees. That is, in the vicinity of the Sun moved in the direction opposite to that in which the planets revolve.
After a while, the classification of the object changes - it does not have the main sign of a comet (coma), that is, it does not “smoke”, nor does it have a tail. It is reclassified to asteroids.
It is open after the passage of perihelion, that is, it is already moving away from the Sun. Why after? It was too weak, dull, and then it was close to the Sun (at a small angular distance from the Sun).
Determine the speed of the object at infinity, about 26 km / s. So there is no doubt that the nature of the object is interstellar. He is retraining in 1I / 2017 U1, I - interstellar, he is given the name - Oumuamua.
Variations in gloss determine its rotation period, about 8 hours. The brilliance changes so much that one has to assume that it is something like a sausage (200x30x30 m), which is strange in itself (a body too elongated, so far it has never been encountered). The emission spectrum cannot be obtained; it is clear that the body is dark, or rather dark red-brown.
Now retreating towards the constellation Pegasus (flew in from the constellation Lyra). Catching up (to try to learn) is unrealistic. There are no such spacecraft.

On June 27, 2018, press releases from the Hubble and the European Southern Observatory are released , from which it follows that Oumuamua moves with little acceleration and its distance from the Sun is about 100,000 kilometers more than it should have been in the absence of acceleration. Therefore, it is proposed to classify Oumuamua again as a comet (the classical mechanism of non-gravitational acceleration of comets is the emission of matter from the side illuminated by the Sun).
But the fact is that no emissions were detected throughout the entire period of Oumuamua's observations.
