Search quality in Runet - 2011

The Ashmanov & Partners company published the final report, “Search Quality on Runet,” ( PDF, 62 pages ), compiled from the results of the analytical service AnalyzeThis.ru . According to the developers, today AnalyzeThis is the only independent test of search quality in Runet.

Probably the most interesting thing in this report is to compare the search quality of Yandex and Google. Many users are subjectively trying to decide for themselves which of these two search engines is looking for "better." The AnalyzeThis website has 23 search quality analyzers and an integrated analyzer of overall search quality, so this service allows you to objectively answer this question.

A detailed description of the operation of the analyzers can be found in the report itself, as well as onAshmanov’s website .

Over the past year, several important events have occurred in the search market. First, the independent search engines “Rambler” and “Aport” ceased to exist, these sites switched to the search for “Yandex”, so on many charts the indicators of “Rambler” and “Aport” in the second half of the year coincide with the indicators of “Yandex” . In turn, Google is increasing its position due to the growing popularity of the Google Chrome browser, the only browser on the world’s Internet that has increased its market share in 2011. Some experts believe that it was thanks to Chrome that Google acquired from January to October 2011, and Yandex lost about 3.5% of Runet’s search traffic.

Google and Yandex show approximately the same quality in terms of navigation and information requests, in the quality of hints, resistance to typos, in the level of SEO-pressure, the amount of spam and the level of advertising load, as well as in the level of updates.

Google is ahead in the quality of the citation search, the quality of the search for homonyms, the search for common words, the relevance of information in the search results and the speed of indexing new pages on the Runet, the level of similarity of search results for synonyms and the number of porn sites in the search results.

In turn, “Yandex outperforms Google in terms of the completeness of the index, search for thematic queries and - very much - in the quality of regional search.

An interesting situation has developed with the marker of the availability of original sources of information in the search results. In this indicator, Google has made significant progress and at the end of the year came close to Yandex.

On the corresponding chart, those search engines that track the originals more correctly occupy high positions.

We have to admit that the quality of processing of this extremely important parameter is unsatisfactory for all search engines. Search engines still poorly "understand" where the original text is and where is the reprint, which often leads to the fact that the site with the copied articles is significantly higher than the site with the original.

In RuNet, Yandex was the leader in determining the originals by the end of the year, however, its share of “successes” does not exceed 50 percent. Unfortunately, almost all other search engines for this indicator demonstrate negative dynamics at all. Note that Yandex also lost ground in November and December - perhaps this is due to the fact that during the year the set of markers in this analyzer remained almost unchanged, and the originals sought became more and more “old”.

The exception is Google, which since October has been consistently improving the quality of search for this parameter. (Already at the beginning of 2012, Google overtook Yandex, bringing the quality of the search for originals to 60%).
